The Tulane School of Professional Advancement (SoPA) offers working adults opportunities to develop and enhance their lives through flexible on-campus and online undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs. Tulane is creating a new program in public administration that will unite experts from academia and the field. This program will also capitalize on the experience of New Orleans and the Gulf South region in addressing economic, social, and climate-related challenges and opportunities.

The Professor of Practice and Director of the Public Administration program is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing administration of degree and certificate programs in fields related to Public Administration. This includes the development of a program rationale and proposal, and the curriculum and coursework for a new master’s of public administration degree, in collaboration with faculty and the school administration. As part of this work, the program director will cultivate and convene stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, both formally and informally, will recruit, hire, train and evaluate both full-time and adjunct faculty, and may provide academic advisement to students in the program(s) and to prospective students. As a Professor of Practice, teaching and service duties are also included.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters degree (PhD Preferred) in Public Administration or a related field 
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience with public administration, public policy, nonprofit administration, and/or public sector-oriented data analytics
  • Teaching experience in post-secondary institutions, ideally both online and “on-ground”
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in government or nonprofit organization, preferably in a managerial role

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY: 

  • Ability to conceptualize, develop and deliver creative, innovative and rigorous higher education programs.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, leading to adjunct faculty recruitment, internship and job opportunities for students and graduates, feedback on programs and curriculum, and prospective grants and donations.
  • Ability to support development and implementation of online courses and programs.
  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Ability to provide quality academic advisement to working adult students.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with individuals of various ages and background.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A PhD in Public Administration or a related field
  • Deep expertise in one or more areas of potential focus for public administration academic programs, including government operations, education administration, economic development, education administration, nonprofit management, public sector data analytics, public affairs or legal affairs.
  • A demonstrable track record of successful design and implementation of education programs.
  • Experience with learning management systems, Canvas preferred. 
  • Experience managing online degree programs.
