Under administrative direction, the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research provides oversight, administration, and leadership for the graduate programs at Angelo State University.

The dean is also responsible for oversight of university research activities and related compliance management.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

Provides direction concerning a variety of administrative and academic issues such as recruiting efforts, admissions procedures, planning and goal setting, curriculum, program development, graduate student learning outcomes assessment, and policy interpretation. Recommends appointments and evaluates graduate assistants, teaching assistants, and research assistants.

Formulates or revises policies and procedures affecting the operations or functions of the college; works with senior administrative officials in matters relating to graduate studies and university programs; develops budgets, monitors expenditures, and ensures compliance with regulations and policies in those expenditures.

Reviews and approves graduate student degree plans; certifies the completion of academic requirements for student graduation; in conjunction with appropriate program faculty, provides academic advice and guidance to current or prospective students; evaluates graduate proposals and theses.

Oversees and serves as the Institutional Official for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, and the Institutional Review Board; is responsible for university research compliance management.

Oversight of the Sponsored Projects and Student Research offices; chairs the Faculty Research Enhancement Program Committee, Compliance Committee, the Graduate Council and serves as the university’s Research Integrity Officer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: graduate academic programs; applicable university policies, procedures, and practices; principles and practices of effective management and employee supervision; budget and grant preparation and administration; federal, state, and university requirements for research and regulatory compliance.

Skilled in: oral, written, and interpersonal communication; organizational and personnel management; project planning and implementation; leadership.

Ability to: plan, organize, implement, direct and evaluate academic and related programs and functions; effectively coordinate a variety of programs and activities; provide effective direction and supervision to support staff and others; deal innovatively with governmental agencies, business, and industry; demonstrate creativity and vision; interpret and correctly apply university policies and procedures; analyze problems and determine appropriate solutions; work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and promote an inclusive environment.

Minimum Qualifications

An earned Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in an academic discipline appropriate to the assignment.

Demonstrated record of teaching and scholarship appropriate to the discipline in which the terminal degree is held sufficient to warrant appointment at a tenured faculty rank.

Two years as an academic department chair or other experience in the management of graduate degree programs.

Experience with research and compliance management.

Experience with online programs, including knowledge of distance education policies, procedures, and best practices at national, state, and university level.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive research and grant writing background.

Experience at the academic dean or associate dean level.

Experience developing online coursework and programs.

Record of promoting an inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students.

Physical Requirements

Position requires prolonged periods of sitting, and intermittent standing, walking, reaching, bending, and grasping. Ability to travel both in state and nationally.
