Dr. Sherlock's research interest focuses on the dysregulation of micronutrients essential for antioxidant defense in neonatal sepsis and subsequent lung injury. Selenium is an essential micronutrient important for regulating inflammation, immunity and oxidative stress. Preterm neonates are at high risk for selenium deficiency due to insufficient third trimester placental transfer. Postnatally, poor enteral absorption, need for parenteral nutrition, and national parenteral selenium shortages further increase risk for continued selenium deficiency.

Selenium supplementation decreases the incidence of late onset sepsis (LOS) in VLBW neonates. However, the mechanisms for selenium's protective effect on LOS mortality is understudied in neonatal models. Dr. Sherlock is currently studying how lipopolysaccharide (LPS) dysregulates selenium status.
