Job Description

The Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Pathologist faculty member at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level who will serve as Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratories of the University of Missouri Healthcare system. The Medical Director reports directly to the Chairman of the Department of Pathology & Anatomical Sciences and works closely with the personnel of UMHC's hospital including the Technical Director of Laboratories, Supervisors of individual laboratories, the Billing Coordinator, and other employees of the hospitals' Department of Pathology, as well as with the Chief Medical Officer and the Executive Committee of the Hospital Medical Staff. Approximately 60% of the duties will be in the hospital laboratories and 40% will be academic duties in the Department of Pathology & Anatomical Sciences (PAS) in the School of Medicine.

The duties of this position include the following:

1. The Laboratory Medical Director is expected to be a bridge between the Hospital laboratories and PAS, as well as between these two entities and all of the physicians in each individual department in UMHC and the medical school who utilize laboratory services.
2. The Director will be expected to exercise appropriate authority but to be able to network with other services and create compromises as appropriate.
3. The Laboratory Medical Director is ultimately responsible for the proper function of all laboratory sections, including those located within University Hospital (UH) and Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH), plus the separate laboratories for Toxicology, ANA, Special Chemistry, and the outlying Clinic Laboratories. The Medical Director is responsible for supervision of all activities necessary for maintenance of the accreditation of the laboratories (through the College of American Pathologists Laboratory Accreditation Program) and other regulatory agencies.
4. The Medical Director is expected to attend multiple meetings of various UMHC committees, details to be settled with consultation with the Department Chairman and the Hospital Laboratories Technical Director.
5. It can be expected that approximately 85% of the Medical Director's time in that role will be at University Hospital, with weekly visits to WCH, and monthly to quarterly visits to Clinic and remote lab locations.
6. The successful applicant should have certification from the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology and one of the CP subspecialties of Chemistry or Microbiology, or have had at least one year of training in Molecular Genetic Pathology. Anatomic Pathology board certification or extensive experience in AP is highly recommended, since the Director approves or participates heavily in refining AP workflow protocols, job positions, QA/QI, and proficiency testing in AP as well as in CP areas.
7. The Director will review IRB/Research protocols which involve the Laboratory for blood or fluid testing as well as tissue use, and work with the IRB to determine if and how the laboratory will participate, and if reimbursement is needed. This review is necessary to avoid disruption in service work flow, and to appropriately budget secretarial, technologist, or professional time in obtaining samples, insuring privacy and ethics of using clinical material for research, and related issues.
8. Perhaps most of all, the Director will work to foster a professional, positive, and honest relationship among all PAS and hospital laboratory employees, and the extra-departmental personnel with whom we interact.


Candidates must have an MD or DO, be qualified for an unrestricted Missouri medical license and have certification (or eligibility for certification) by the American Board of Pathology.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a focused area of academic investigation and publication.
