Job Title Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication
Job Description
The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Strategic Communication, beginning Fall 2018. This tenure track position is being offered at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will be expected to achieve excellence in teaching and to help lead development of the UNT Dallas Communication and Technology Department, which offers the B.A. degree, with tracks in digital production, strategic communication, communication studies, and sports communication. This new faculty member will provide leadership in developing curricula, service and experiential learning opportunities, academic and community partnerships, and internships in nonprofit, media, and for-profit sectors throughout the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The successful candidate will be expected to help develop the Communication and Technology major as a premier, highly visible program at UNT Dallas.

We are particularly interested in student-centric, innovative, and energetic candidates who can help lead the development of UNTD's Communication and Technology Department through program development, student recruitment, and community outreach. We seek an experienced academic leader who can contribute to the Communication and Technology program by teaching a range of courses in strategic communication, as well as other communication areas. This new faculty member will also be responsible for developing online courses; a student strategic communication club; and collaborative relationships with area public relations and advertising agencies, broadcasters, community colleges, high schools, radio stations, and other communication entities. Professional experience in the communication fieldparticularly strategic communicationwould be a plus.

UNT Dallas offers faculty the unique opportunity to help shape the character of a 21st century, learner-focused, urban comprehensive university. The Communication and Technology program currently includes a Speaking Center and online student radio station. The university will complete a new academic building in March 2019, which will feature a 6,000 square-foot media production suite and second radio station. It is our goal to build a state-of-the-art Communication and Technology Department in one of the country's premier media markets, providing training, networking, and direct access to jobs for our graduates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Expectations for tenure track faculty at UNTD include excellent teaching, research, and service, resulting in contributions equivalent to a four-course load each semester. This workload expectation can be fulfilled through a combination of teaching, high quality research and scholarship, service, and program development. Faculty are also expected to participate in such service activities as curriculum development, online course development, student recruiting and advising, program assessment, project development, program leadership, coordinating service learning, and committee leadership.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in communication, strategic communication, or other closely related field; or MFA in media production, visual communication, graphic design, or other closely related field
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching a range of strategic communication courses, such as Introduction to Strategic Communication, Computer Graphics, Creative Concepts, Strategic Communication Campaigns, Public Relations Case Studies, Sports Public Relations, and Crisis Communication
  • Experience or demonstrated potential for developing collaborative community partnerships
  • Experience or demonstrated potential in building, maintaining, and supervising a broad-based student internship program
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for excellence in scholarship and community service
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for leadership in academic program development
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Experience in teaching courses in sports communication
  • Evidence or demonstrated potential for excellence in online teaching and developing and implementing service learning and experiential learning programs
  • Experience in building and supervising student organizations
  • Experience in professional communication, such as public relations, advertising, media production, sports communication, journalism, or health communication
  • Academic experience working on a university campus with a culturally diverse population

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions
Work is primarily sedentary. Sits comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds.
