Student Affairs Officer – Bioinformatics Dept.   (Req. 28874)

Under the general supervision of the Program Chair and the Boyer Hall MSO, provide primary administrative and program support to ensure the optimal functioning of the Bioinformatics Interdepartmental Ph.D. Program. Working with the Boyer Hall fund manager, serve as the administrative coordinator for the Training Grant in Biomedical Big Data Science, which is managed by the Bioinformatics IDP.
 

Advise students and faculty mentors regarding University and program policies and procedures governing graduate education.
 

Coordinate admissions, curriculum, course offerings, program requirements, and teaching evaluations. Prepare all relevant course and time-to-degree materials. Counsel individual students in academic difficulty; apprise Program Chair and appropriate faculty as needed. Conduct annual orientation for incoming students. Provide fellowship and other funding information. Track graduate student support stipends, fee payments and awards.
 

Serve as staff member on the program's governing committee. Serve as liaison to university's Graduate Division and other graduate programs and campus committees.

Required:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills sufficient to interpret and convey complex information relating to the duties of the position. Ability to compose and edit concise, logical and grammatically correct correspondence and other communications in standard English. Persuasive oral and written communication skills are required to prepare and present recruitment strategies, proposals and promotional materials.
• Ability and personality to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators and students campus-wide; to exercise initiative and accept responsibility; to work proactively and with minimal supervision under heavy workload with frequent interruptions; and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Demonstrated skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, and/or procedures to define problems or objectives.
• Ability to obtain, synthesize, and utilize information appropriately; ability to communicate and present information to faculty and administrative staff members in order to maintain consistency within the program and to develop new policies.
• Demonstrated skill in advising students on complex information, difficult conditions and providing multiple options, utilizing detailed knowledge of policies and past precedents; 
skill in employing fundamental counseling techniques with sensitivity to assist students in the resolution of problems; skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds for the purpose of advising students and working with faculty, staff, and the community.
• Demonstrated skill in negotiating: exchanging ideas, information and opinions with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions or solutions
• Demonstrated skill in student support funding, initiating and submitting timely and accurate financial transactions; ability to assemble, analyze, interpret and present financial data clearly and concisely.
