Professional Research Assistant - Retina Stem Cell and Regeneration

Nature of Work


The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking applicants for a full-time Professional Research Assistant position in the area of stem cells and regenerative medicine for the retina. The successful candidate will join CellSight - the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program, a cross-disciplinary team of investigators working in a highly collaborative environment with the common goal of developing novel stem cell-based therapeutics to treat ocular diseases.

This position will share responsibilities in the overall management of the cell culture facility within the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program, and will play a critical role in ensuring the proper functioning of the core facilities as well as in the training and supervision of personnel. Also importantly, the PRA will lead specific research projects in a highly independent manner, and contribute with her/his expertise to more comprehensive programmatic research goals.

Examples of Work Performed

The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Management and supervision of the overall functioning of our new state-of-the-art stem cell culture facility
  • Coordination and supervision of specialized equipment within the stem cell culture facility
  • Development, implementation, and enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for quality control at the stem cell culture facility
  • Development and implementation of electronic systems to coordinate and control SOPs, equipment use and maintenance, general procedures and practices, etc.
  • Lead specific research projects, designing and executing experiments, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data
  • Contribute to other research projects led by other investigators, by assisting in specific techniques and intellectually contributing to the experimental design
  • Contribute to the design and execution of programmatic research projects


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in a biomedical science discipline
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in training research personnel and laboratory management
  • Experience in culture and differentiation of stem cells, particularly human pluripotent stem cells

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:
  • Experience in laboratory SOPs development and implementation
  • Experience in cell biology techniques, including tissue processing (paraffin and cryo embedding), immune-based assays, fluorescence standard and confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and cell sorting at a minimum
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA isolation; cDNA synthesis; real time PCR; vector construction and cloning; plasmid preparations; sequencing; DNA library preparation; western blot; electrophoresis at a minimum
  • Track of co-authored publications in relevant fields
