The Veterinary Clinical Pathologist of the Comparative Pathology Shared Resource (CPSR) Program provides clinical pathology services including hematology, clinical chemistry, biomarker and assay development, and research collaboration in support of the UC Denver Animal Care and Use program through the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources and the Department of Pathology in the School of Medicine. The CPSR will draw from the resources at the University of Colorado Denver and the other institutions along the Front Range of Colorado. The Department of Pathology in the School of Medicine is a "hybrid" basic science and clinical department, and the successful individual will have a primary appointment in the Pathology Department. Both administrative and academic units are based at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, a northeastern suburb of Denver, Colorado. The Pathology Department seeks to establish active partnerships through the biomedical community, the region and the profession as it grows, focused on the origins of human disease. This position will aid the director of CPSR in developing internal and external relationships as well as help to educate animal model investigators about comparative pathology and eventually aid in the development of a graduate level program that will result in trainee pathologists having a strong background in comparative pathology. The individual in this position will serve as a comparative (veterinary) pathologist, with expertise in clinical pathology, to the >300 researchers working with animal models of human disease at the Anschutz Medical Campus and will, with the assistance of an ACVP-boarded consultant clinical pathologist, establish a veterinary clinical pathology laboratory. Operating on a fee-for-service basis, this laboratory offers microvolume hematology analyses, in support of serial-sample mouse model hematology evaluations, and clinical pathology analysis/interpretation of bone marrow, clinical chemistries, urine or CSF on an ‘as needed' basis. This individual will also provide pathological expertise and phenotyping of genetically manipulated animals as a service or as a collaborator with individual researchers. The individual is able to pursue independent research and grant funding, as long as primary responsibilities to the CPRS are performed. Secure funding for this position is not grant dependent.

The individual in this position will continually promote the fusion of laboratory animal and veterinary pathology and medicine with human pathology in a comparative model.

Preferred and Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree (M.S., or Ph.D)
  • Experience, expertise and interest in phenotyping and clinico-pathological evaluation of genetically engineered rodents
  • Academic credentials with teaching experience and participation in mentoring graduate students
  • Publications in laboratory animal (clinical) pathology a plus

Professional Field and Required Skills
  • D.V.M. or equivalent from an AVMA-Accredited School of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent foreign degree.
  • Previous training and experience in laboratory animal clinical pathology and interest in experimental pathology
  • Board certification in pathology (ACVP or ECVP)
