About the Unit
The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact launched in 2014 with a fundraising goal of $4.5 billion. In March 2017, that goal was expanded to $5 billion. The campaign is the most ambitious and comprehensive in the University's history. Campaign priorities cover every division, school, department, and institute across the University. Along with its fundraising goal, the campaign has an equally ambitious goal of engaging 125,000 alumni through intellectual, professional, and social activities on campus, around the world, and online. To date, $4.5 billion has been raised and more than 124,000 alumni have connected with the University through volunteering, giving, events, and online interactions. The Urban Education Institute (UEI) bridges education research and practice to foster greater equity and excellence in public schooling. UEI consists for four integrated units: • \tThe Consortium on School Research, which builds the capacity for school reform by conducting research that identifies what matters for student success and school improvement. • \tUChicago Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP), an MAT program which prepares teachers to educate the next generation of learners in urban classrooms and communities. • \tUChicago Charter School, a pre-k through 12th grade superhighway which prepares 1,700 students on Chicago's South Side to be critical thinkers and leaders. • \tUChicago Impact, which partners with school leaders and educators nationwide to drive school and student success. UEI's development team consists of a full-time Development Director, a full-time Associate Director and a part-time Assistant Director. UChicago's Alumni Relations and Development provides significant support through prospect management, prospect research, professional development, gift planning, gift processing, and other vital services.

Job Information

Job Summary:

The Associate Director, Development – UEI is responsible for leading and executing UEI's fundraising from foundations and corporations. He/she may also develop proposals and reports for individuals and family foundations.

Responsibilities:

• In collaboration with the Director of Development, formulate and execute a strategic plan to expand foundation and corporate giving at UEI.
• Partner with central Foundation and Corporate Relations and other fundraising colleagues to develop a coordinated solicitation and stewardship strategy for each prospect.
• Work with senior leadership and colleagues across UEI to define investment opportunities for foundations and corporations, including some family foundations.
• Match the interests and philanthropic capabilities of prospects with the needs and long-term goals of UEI and the University.
• Develop and maintain relationships with organizational program officers.
• Facilitate relationships between program officers and UEI and University leadership.
• Prepare materials, including concept papers, proposals, briefings, correspondence, and reports.
• Assist UEI program staff in defining programs and budgetary needs for presentation to philanthropic institutions.
• Track report and proposal deadlines and ensure deadlines are met.
• Collaborate with UEI and ARD communications staff to develop and implement selected communications efforts such as the UEI email newsletter and marketing materials that include donor audiences.
• Manage the execution of multiple projects, enlisting the support of other staff where appropriate.
• Apply appropriate technologies and skills for data gathering, manipulation and management. Use Griffin and other databases to support the progress of foundation and corporate initiatives across UEI and to coordinate strategies with colleagues.
• Participate in activities that will increase knowledge of UEI, other urban initiatives and the University to lead to more effective qualification, cultivation and solicitation efforts.
• May hire, train and manage staff, students and temporary workers.
• Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certifications:

Education:

• Bachelor's degree or higher required.

Experience:

• A minimum of three years of professional work experience in nonprofit management, development, alumni relations, marketing, public relations, sales or similar professional work experience required.
• Proven record of accomplishment in solicitations and cultivation of prospective donors, or sales and client development required.
• A minimum of one year of leading a project team or managing staff required.
• Experience writing proposals and reports and tracking deadlines required.
• A minimum of one year of experience of developing and monitoring budgets preferred.
• Experience with fundraising, contact management or other database software preferred.
• Experience navigating large, complex institutions preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

• Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

• Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
• Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
