I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking a Director of Development, SEAS for the George Washington University.
DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

This position will support the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and will report to the Assistant Vice President. This role includes working alongside Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) staff across the division to create and execute a sustainable development program that will broaden GWs base of philanthropic support.
The Director of Development, SEAS is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of 100-120 major gift prospects for SEAS and will also develop and execute a strategy to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward the larger gifts at the university at six figures or more. The Director of Development, SEAS will build strong relationships with GW alumni and friends, facilitating annual philanthropic support. This position requires one-on-one engagement with portfolio and will complete 8-10 monthly prospect visits in pursuit of this goal.
The Director of Development, SEAS also supports the development strategy and management within SEAS and is essential for achieving ambitious goals for philanthropic support for faculty support, student support, academic programs, and capital priorities. The position will provide senior leadership and mentorship for Assistant and Associate Director-level gift officers as assigned. This position may work closely with the Dean and the gift officers to develop and execute sustainable fundraising programs that result in significant philanthropic investment and resources for the faculty, students, and programs. The Director of Development, SEAS will also participate in working group and activities within DAR that advance university fundraising and contribute to a productive fundraising environment. This college fundraising leader will serve as an honest broker of donor interests and fundraising opportunities for a variety of areas within their school and/or division and across campus and model a collaborative approach to fundraising at all times.

This position will also provide direct support to the dean, administrative leadership, volunteers, and faculty as needed, including but not limited to producing and sharing briefing materials, staffing donor visits and drafting proposals and correspondence. The Director of Development, SEAS will handle sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner and will display a willingness to make cold calls in order to successfully schedule face to face visits with donor prospects; The ideal candidate is able to utilize considerable initiative, independence, and originality to lead projects, guide donor prospects toward philanthropic priorities, and develop new methods and techniques for donor engagement.

Duties:

• Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward 100-120 major gift prospects for respective school and/or division.
• Coordinate and collaborate with school and central development staff to identify prospects, develop proposals, and cultivate strategic relationships with funding sources.
• Work with SEAS development leadership, faculty, and central development teams to identify major gift prospects.
• Work with development teams, faculty, and volunteers to establish programs and strategies for the cultivation of identified major gift prospects, including visits by appropriate faculty, social events, advisory boards, and other efforts.
• Make personal calls to solicit major gifts for constituent units.
• Works in conjunction with Alumni Relations on strategies for enhancing alumni engagement and loyalty to the Schools through specific events and activities.
• Supervises other gift officers as assigned.
• Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

• A Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, public relations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary. An advanced degree is preferred.
• A minimum of six years of development experience is preferred, with specific experience in major gifts, volunteer and project management.
• Demonstrated ability in cultivating and soliciting gifts at the six-figure level.
• Prior development experience at an engineering institution strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with donor management systems and a high degree of comfort with using technology to communicate, track, and share information.
• Strategic planning skills that include the ability to develop, implement, and monitor short-and long-term goals for engagement, donor acquisition and retention.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal and project management skills.
• Understanding of higher education and philanthropy.
• A strong record of collaborating with a team to achieve goals.
• Ability to travel locally and nationally when necessary and to work on occasional evenings and weekends.
