I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Deputy Athletics Director directly assists the Athletics Director with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The Deputy is responsible for oversight, policy development, budget and personnel management of varies internal areas and sport programs. The position is also responsible for managing National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) governance related issues and serves as the Sports Administrator for several particular sports programs.

Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • Represents the department and the Director of Athletics in various capacities, oversees all day-to-day operations of the department in the absence of the Director of Athletics.
  • Represents the department on various University, Athletic 10 and NCAA Committees.
  • Partners with the Director of Athletics to establish and direct the execution of the strategic plan for the Department, including the development of:
    • short- and long-term strategic and operational goals grounded in our values (Determination, Commitment, Respect) that work to build a Department that performs with discipline and excellence;
    • execution strategies and evaluation of current procedures and practices for accomplishing strategic objectives; and
    • appropriate evaluation tools (i.e. assessments, benchmarks, scorecards) to measure progress and adherence to strategies and outcomes.
  • Serves as a department liaison to multiple campus partners, including Human Resources and the Office of General Counsel.
  • Is responsible for ensuring compliance with appropriate NCAA, Atlantic 10 Conference (and other affiliated conferences), and University policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Oversees personnel who are responsible for diversity education initiatives for all constituents of department, including students, staff, and coaches.
  • Oversees the Sport Administrator program, including on-boarding of new sport admins to duties, standards and evaluation of all coaches and sport programs.
  • Serves as Sport Administrator for designated teams to provide leadership and guidance to coaching staff in carrying out administration of sport programs.
  • May serve as Senior Woman Administrator if appropriate.

The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC but may require significant domestic and international travel for games and events. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Relevant experience must include at least 2 years of senior management level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience in sports management/administration, higher education administration, collegiate athletics administration, and/or Division 1 coaching
  • Strong background in policy creation
  • Strong background in assessment
  • Experience in Risk Management and Crisis Response
  • Master's or Doctoral degree
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships around campus
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines with limited resources and multiple competing priorities
