Job Description Summary:
Southwestern Michigan College is seeking a Part-Time Professional Math Tutor for our Niles campus who is dedicated and enthusiastic. This position will start in the Spring semester (January 2019).

Professional Tutors report to the Coordinator of Tutoring Services and the assistant Coordinator of Niles. Professional Tutors will provide academic support and subject specific tutoring for students as well as participate in professional development and training as appropriate for their subject or position. Professional Tutors are active both in the classroom and in The Learning Lab in the Fred L. Mathews Library or the Niles campus, interacting with students in both individual and group situations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide subject area tutoring services to students, faculty, and staff in one or more academic area: math, science, writing, accounting, business, or health services/nursing.
  • Develop and implement a plan for tutoring that addresses content area skill development, study skill strategies, and uses best practices in tutor subject area to enable students to become independent learners.
  • Record and submit detailed documentation of each tutoring session.
  • Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and mentoring new peer tutors each semester.
  • Assist the Coordinator in developing and maintaining relationships with key faculty.
  • Assist in the development and/or presentation of student retention workshops or seminars.
  • Assist students with general computer and printer use.
  • Attend all tutor trainings, professional development opportunities, and staff meetings required by the Coordinator.
  • Meet with the Coordinator to establish professional development and position goals/objectives. Designate meeting dates with Coordinator to review and update goals/objectives.
  • Present a professional demeanor at all times in both personality/dress and provide exceptional customer service.
  • This position requires travel to both Dowagiac and Niles Campuses and some hours outside of normal shifts to accommodate training and presentations.

    2. The physical requirements of this position.
    Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. 3. The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision.
    The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

    • Knowledge of:
    • Basic material presented in college classes.
    • Computer and office applications, particularly Microsoft Office, Google Docs and Drive, and other content platforms.
    • Skills:
    • Strong public orientation and ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
    • Exemplary student service abilities.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work well with individuals with diverse backgrounds.
    • Attention to detail.
