Job Description: Senior System Administrator

This is a One Year Fixed Term, Benefits Eligible position.

Senior System Administrator will be a member of the newly created Enterprise Infrastructure Engineering/DevOps team(Part of University IT). He or She will be providing system administration support for the Alumni and Development Information Systems and other University departments.
This position will be initially responsible for day to day administration of our Windows and Linux servers, Virtualization infrastructure and all supporting hardware and software systems. This is a very hands-on position. Applicants must have significant experience executing detailed project initiatives that will maintain our superb reputation of University IT Team. He or she will be providing server side infrastructure support and work closely with our software development, desktop support, help desk and other departments to insure a superior experience for our clients. This position will eventually turn into 100% devops role as the main project requiring full attention will progressively fade away over time.

Core Duties:

  • Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems, utilities, and applications software on computing systems.
  • Resolve system emergencies with significant impact on the integrity of user data and systems.
  • Design, configure, implement, and maintain system security strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Establish software/hardware standards and systems policies and procedures.
  • Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systems development and integration.
  • Conceptualize and implement systems within broad technical or structural frameworks.
  • Perform capacity planning for system configuration, software services, network services, load distribution, and service interrelationships among computer systems.
  • Act as a technical expert or lead for local computer system administration.
  • Act as project leader on large-scale computing projects in which strong technical, directional, and personal leadership is necessary; assign and oversee the work of other system administrators as needed.
  • Manage vendor relationships and cost effective hardware and software maintenance agreements with vendors.
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Manage hardware, software, and utilities for installation, modification, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.
  • Manage the ServiceNow queue - keep tickets up-to-date, assigning and re-assigning as necessary. Follow-up with clients and close tickets in a timely manner.
  • Use automation, orchestration and scripting tools to manage existing and future systems.
  • Maintain knowledge of new hardware, software, best practices and current trends in industry and how it may apply to the existing infrastructure.
  • Attend training in order to keep skills current.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers.
  • Act as liaison with various departments across campus.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • Experience with complex multi-system platforms and vendors.
  • Experience coordinating multi-system and computing environments in independent computing facilities.
  • Experience developing/implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.
  • Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computing needs.
  • Expert ability to program in multiple programming languages in multiple operating systems.
  • Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of security trends and best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with Windows AD directory, Group Policies, FileSharing, PowerShell and Windows Server environment.
  • Hands on experience with Linux shell, Python, Perl or other scripting tools.
  • Experience with deploying and maintaining VMware Vsphere infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of monitoring tools such as Nagios or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with server backup tools such as Veeam, CrashPlan or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS services such as EC2, S3, Storage gateway as well IaaS automation tools.
  • Experience managing complex patching deployment.
  • Proven record towards automating all the things.
  • Networking background with basic knowledge of networking equipment and understanding of firewall rules.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at the same time.
  • Demonstrated strong conceptual, logical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required plus the ability to convey complicated technical issues in an easy-to-comprehend fashion to non-technical staff.

Additional Qualifications:

The following qualifications are a great plus but not required
  • MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer) certification
  • Working knowledge of iSCSI SANs and distributed files systems.
  • Experience with Redhat/CentOS Linux
  • Experience with PCI and Restricted Data classifications
  • Experience with Ossec monitoring
  • Experience with Splunk Enterprise
  • Experience with infrastructure orchestration such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Terraform or similar
  • Experience with GCP/Azure or other cloud platforms
  • Experience with BigFix
  • Person with strong interest in leading edge tech and track record of continuing education.
  • Detail oriented, methodical, meticulous, and process-oriented person who is prepared to instill the processes in a diverse, complex environment.

Working Conditions & Standards
  • Exposed to high voltage electricity, noise >80dB TWA, confined spaces, hot temperatures, heavy metals.
  • Occasional extended hours and some weekends
