Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
Union College, a nationally recognized, distinguished liberal arts college, seeks an experienced and innovative leader to become its next Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students (VPSA). Reporting to the President and serving on the President’s senior leadership team, the VPSA will be an advocate for students, visible campus leader, and a builder of community. The VPSA will join the College at an opportune time to set a strategy for student affairs and to further leverage Union’s focus on the student experience inside and outside the classroom. This is a tremendous opportunity for a dynamic professional with a deep understanding of, and commitment to, student development in a residential liberal arts setting.
Founded in 1795, and located in Schenectady, New York, Union College is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges in the nation. As the first college to redefine the traditional liberal arts education with modern languages, science, and engineering early in its history, Union is committed to integrating the humanities and social sciences with science and engineering in new and exciting ways. A Union education is rigorous, innovative, and encourages students to work beyond the limits of disciplinary boundaries, allowing them to think globally and lead creatively in a world where problem solving requires breadth across humanities, arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering without sacrificing depth of preparation.
It is an exciting moment at Union as Dr. David Harris joined the College as its 19th President in July 2018. President Harris has engaged the students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and Board of Trustees in an ambitious path for the next generation of the College. In the fall of 2018, he launched a strategic planning effort to strengthen Union’s commitment to the student residential and academic experience and ensure their complimentary nature. The VPSA will work closely with President Harris and other senior colleagues in leading an institutional shift aimed at reaffirming and reinventing the student’s residential experience. The VPSA will bring a deep understanding of contemporary issues in student affairs and build partnerships across campus to enhance the comprehensive student experience at Union. The VPSA oversees a staff of approximately 190 individuals with ten direct reports and a budget of $6 million.
