If this sounds like you, Public Affairs invites you to consider joining our team as our Graphic Design Specialist.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has a lot of stories to tell. From Nobel Prize-winning theories to biomedical innovations to the birthplace of special education, wheelchair athletics and the modern idea of physical accessibility - we've got a 150+ year tradition as a place where people refuse to accept "that's just how it is" as a suitable reason to stop asking hard questions. And every day our faculty, staff and students add about 60,000 more stories to that legacy. We're looking for a designer with the creativity, talent, vision and drive to help the campus share those stories - big and small - with the world in a consistent, coordinated and targeted way.

As part of our team, the graphic design specialist will lead our efforts to develop visual and graphic design solutions for Public Affairs' campus-wide communications initiatives that build the Illinois brand and global reputation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist Public Affairs team develop and implement visual communication strategies for students, parents, faculty members, donors, corporate and foundation executives, news media, alumni and state and local policymakers.
  • Design for print and digital platforms, including information graphics, social media graphics, Powerpoint presentations, marketing materials, digital displays, posters, flyers and brochures.
  • Create visual design elements to amplify content about the educational, scholarly and public engagement impact of the university.
  • Create high-quality, professional collateral materials for use by senior campus leadership.
  • Provide leadership to Public Affairs team to develop and deploy creative content to support major campus communications campaigns.
  • Collaborate with Public Affairs video producers, photographers and writers to add visual impact to their productions.
  • Work with the News Bureau and social media directors to create visual elements to enhance general audience understanding of complex ideas and engage university audiences.
  • Collaborate with News Bureau beat editors to create engaging visual elements including illustrations, maps and information graphics.
  • Be prepared to respond quickly to fast-breaking developments, which may involve nontraditional hours of work.
  • Make accurate and timely decisions about information of importance to the various news media.
  • Assist the social media team in building greater engagement with stakeholders through current and emerging social platforms.
  • Collaborate with Public Affairs social media team and campus wide social media directors to develop new strategies and processes to create more compelling, consistent and innovative visual messages across the university social media platforms.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in design, communications or related field
  • One year of work experience in graphic design or a closely related field


PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Two to four years of graphic design experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Advanced skills in current design software including Adobe Creative Cloud. Excellent visual design and communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience implementing best-practices in graphic/visual design for various platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, Powerpoint and the web.
  • Working understanding of printing processes, photography and typography
  • Outstanding conceptual design skills with experience in illustration, motion graphics or digital animation
  • Experience using design to help audiences better understand complex concepts or ideas
  • Ability to clearly and consistently organize, manage and present complex information
  • Understanding of best practices for accessible and responsive design in digital environments
  • Knowledge of current methods and conventions of graphic design
  • Professionalism and ability to interact with senior administrative and academic officials
  • Oral and written and interpersonal communication skills, organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while producing accurate work on deadline while exercising discretion and judgment
  • Keep up-to-date with changing technologies.
  • Ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment with limited supervision
  • Ability to multi-task, often with frequent interruptions.
  • Some evening and weekend hours required.


This is a full-time Civil Service Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after January 4, 2019. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Academic Resources

Academic resources on campus are among the finest in the world. Students have access to thousands of computer terminals in classrooms, residence halls, and campus libraries for use in classroom instruction, study, and research.

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
