VP, Durham and Regional Affairs

Position Summary

The Senior Public Relations Specialist works closely with colleagues and with diverse partners in the Duke and Durham communities to create and implement office communication strategies. The communication specialist establishes standards and provides oversight of editorial content for website, publications and other internal and external communication channels. Perform a variety of technical and creative duties for website management.

Work Performed
  • Debug issues that arise with the performance of the website.
  • Interface for performance issues: Liaison between OIT and Durham Affairs; address issues and maintain strong relationships with OIT.
  • Troubleshoot the site: content, links, order flows
  • Review statistics and monitor analytics: making sure everything is functioning properly on the website, provide analysis of Durham Affairs business health
  • Plan for future changes to the website: Beyond focus of day-to-day activities, improvement of website as a whole, stay current on software and hardware in order to continuously improve website.
  • Work with colleagues to identify the office's communication priorities based on evolving goals and audiences, and develop and maintain an appropriate communications plan.
  • Manage department media efforts to publicize and brand department activities and events (website, print, video, social media).
  • Great writing skills: Write articles and produce story packages about Office of Durham Affairs programs and initiatives as well as the Doing Good in the Neighborhood campaign. Maintain an office-wide editorial calendar.
  • Develop internal and external communication to include reports, one-pagers, talking points, op-eds, advertisements, and social media posts.
  • Give in-person presentations about the work of the Office of Durham Affairs at Duke Departments and in the Durham community.
  • Support fundraising and grant-writing efforts for Office of Durham Affairs programs.
  • Work with colleagues to maintain a consistent Office of Durham Affairs style and brand across print and online materials as well as a consistent office mission, goals and values during in-person meetings and presentations.
  • Manage the office communications budget and oversee communication projects requiring external vendors.
  • Maintain relationships with partners at Duke and in Durham, to stay attuned to internal and external communication channels and to solicit content updates and opportunities for collaboration.
  • Maintain important office documents and archives.
    • Coordinate with Duke Communications personnel to support exposure and recognition of the Durham Affairs office.
  • Maintain Professionalism in the workplace and community
  • Good sense of Duke University and the City of Durham
  • A strong sense of self awareness, not easily influenced by others
  • Supervise communications intern
  • Respond to emails sent to Office of Durham Affairs general inbox.


Preferred Skills:
Strong writing skills and an interest in communication strategies are a must, and experience with Adobe Creative Suite, photography and videography.

Education

Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and relatedactivities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editingnormally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree inJournalism, English or a related discipline.
