Job description

The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Food, and the Environment seeks a collaborative and engaging Lab Manager for the Soil and Plant Analysis lab, a shared-use facility in support of faculty research and teaching. Duties include assisting faculty, technical staff and students in method development and analytical procedures (including QA/QC protocols) in support of faculty research goals, training operators of laboratory equipment, conducting oversight and maintenance of instrumentation, maintaining lab supply and reagent inventory, monitoring and maintaining the instrumentation user database, and ensuring that proper laboratory safety and hazardous waste disposal protocols are being followed.

Physical Requirements

Lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 25 lbs; and sitting or standing for long periods of time.


Typically Monday-Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; 40 hours/week; or as needed to complete job duties.


Current skills should include experience in analytical techniques germane to soil, plant, and water analysis. For example, the candidate will be expected to utilize two new instruments in the lab, a new state-of-the-art Agilent 5110 Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and a Hach Lachat Quickchem 8500 Flow Injection Autoanalyzer for nutrient analysis in various extracts, in addition to existing instrumentation in the laboratory. Excellent interpersonal skills are expected as this job requires communication with departmental students, staff, and faculty. Method development and publication in support of faculty and graduate student objectives are encouraged.
