Stanford University is seeking a Senior Flow Cytometrist for Training and Operations at the Shared FACS Facility (SSFF). The Shared FACS Facility is a fee-for-service that is heavily used to support the cell sorting and analysis needs of the School of Medicine and researchers throughout the Stanford community. Primary responsibilities of the Senior Flow Cytometrist will be to oversee researcher training, including update and maintenance of instrument SOP for both staff and researchers. This position will provide a lead for daily operations within the facility, including oversight of instrument maintenance, QC, and operation. The ideal candidate will be an expert in flow cytometry instrumentation, applications, and experimental design/analysis, and be able to successfully work with and teach persons with a variety of learning styles. This role will encompass most aspects of the Flow Cytometry facility, including the scientific, technical, and managerial roles outlined below.

Duties include:

  • Design and implement training procedures and facility SOP for both researchers seeking to learn the instrument operation, as well as for less experienced staff. Oversee scheduling and implementation of training procedures used by all facility staff
  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches, compile data on results and present to both facility staff and the research community. This work includes development of approaches both in flow cytometry education, as well as technical protocol development including optimization of sample preparation and staining protocols, instrumentation maintenance, QC, and troubleshooting SOPs
  • Work with research staff on implementation of updates to FACS Facility instruments and computer capabilities and assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants
  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project. This includes staying up-to-date with new technologies and protocols that forward the central goal of SSFF to support the research community.
  • Provide operation support as needed to support researchers within the facility
  • Provide users with data analysis support for generated data, using FlowJo, SPADE, and viSNE software.
  • Understand and utilize a variety of biological applications, cell handling techniques, and reagents used by researchers and to assist them in designing and optimizing their FACS experiments;
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule and to work in a BSL-2 environment to meet the needs of the facility
  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
  • Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

    Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related science field.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • Expert level knowledge and skills in field of science related to research project.
  • General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Developing project management skills.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.
