Maps & Records creates and maintains a central resource of historic, current and future land, buildings, real estate and infrastructure information for Stanford University. Maps & Records is a part of the department of Land, Buildings & Real Estate and serves as an information resource and mapping service for all areas of the organization. We also serve as a facilities information resource and mapping service to departments campus wide.




What we do:




We provide several services in support of our mission including:



Research services Online resources and associated training Map products
Custom mapping, surveying and geographic information system (GIS) services
Floor Plans and Space Data
Utility locating required by law (Underground Service Alert)
Plans review communication and hosting
Standards and policy for the use of spatial information
Additional key responsibilities include:
Data and system support for Stanford's indirect cost recovery

Ongoing maintenance of Stanford's infrastructure and utilities maps

Coordination and communication of address ID and facility ID assignments

Shepherding the on-going development of facilities information resources

Mapping and data support for Stanford Emergency Preparedness & Planning

Supporting the facility design guidelines updating process

Leading campus-wide construction logistics meetings and mapping

Who you are




You are the Geospatial analyst I - mapping technician.

You are passionate about maps, construction, drawings and engineering survey instruments.

You enjoy producing usable drawings with AutoCAD and embrace learning new spatial software and technologies. You took your love for all these items and decided to pursue it as a career…which is why you are reading this and are really excited to read some more.

You are a fan of geography and technology and truly enjoy how they both come together. Never has there been a better pairing. Not even Peanut butter and jelly comes close!

You enjoy going out to the field, interacting with contractors and being part of a construction project. You enjoy challenges and work well under pressure, and you have the technical proficiency to learn new technology quickly.

You have been at constructions sites and enjoy all the rewards and challenges that come with working in the field: walking around a worksite, marking the location of subsurface utilities on the ground for excavation, collecting data, seeing a project come together, interacting with a variety of people and creating maps for others to use.

Your primary responsibilities include**:




You will go out to the field and meet with contractors, engineers, excavators. You are the eyes and ears of the campus. You will be the gatekeeper of the work started, and as such, you will have constant communication with contractors.

• Under direct supervision assist with the collection, production and presentation of engineering quality geospatial information.
• Assist with engineering quality field data collection and measurements using engineering survey instruments.
• Safely drive Stanford University vehicles to construction sites
• You will be out on the field up to 70% of the time - assisting excavators to help identify any obstacles before any work is started
• Inform engineers, licensed contractors, and utility system owners on construction plans of subsurface utility locations.
• Assist with locating and marking subsurface utilities in support of construction projects.
• You will be on your feet walking the site or on your knees looking at holes, clamps, open boxes or jumping inside a trench to trace utilities.
• Use equipment to open manhole and utility vaults - sewer storm drain, high volt, communication vaults, etc.
• Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. [Carrying tracing machine on a backpack]
• You will collect mapping data using drones, 3d laser scanners, total station and GPS
• Using AutoCAD, you will produce engineering quality plans, maps, drawings, schematics, and cross sections for use in construction of small to medium projects and ongoing operations.
• Query geospatial data sets to produce map-based reports for use in reports and management analyses.

The schedule will be Monday to Friday = 7 am to 4 pm

Weekends - occasional weekends as necessary

To be Successful in this position, you will bring:

• Associate's degree and two years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
• Knowledge of and ability to use geospatial software programs such as CAD, GIS, databases, and geospatial data processing engines.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering plans and drawings.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to individuals with a wide range of language skills and from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to complete basic mathematical calculations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License
