Research IT (https://med.stanford.edu/researchit) at the Stanford School of Medicine, Information Resources and Technology (IRT) is looking for a scientific project manager to help with project delivery across a range of biomedical efforts. Research IT builds and supports Stanford Biomedical Data Commons (e.g. Clinical Data Warehouse) and collaborates with other service providers on campus to bring a suite of federated and interconnected data management and analytical ecosystems (e.g. biobank, secure research computing). Additionally, Research IT provides custom software development services across a range of complex scientific endeavors in basic and clinical research. These include small and large scale clinical trials, learning healthcare and predictive analytics solutions, research registries, national level consortium projects involving different biomedical data types like Electronic Medical Record, imaging, genomics, and wearable sensor data etc. At Stanford, we work closely with researchers, physicians, administrators, legal and regulatory entities. We also collaborate broadly with industry, and other academic institutes.

At a typical time, the Biomedical Informatics project manager may be responsible for 4-5 simultaneous projects involving complex IT, scientific and data workflows. Often they will come in during project startup (first 6-9 months of a project) when there is significant information gathering and coordination is required between various parties. Project manager will be required to demonstrate strong communication and problem solving skills, deep knowledge of data management technologies and software development lifecycle, strong ability to synthesize complex information to generate viable project roadmap, strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

Day to day responsibilities include:
  • Technical and scientific requirements gathering from stakeholders. Writing vision documents, statement of work documents, compliance and other documents.
  • Identification of project milestones and deliverables and development of roadmap.
  • Identification of risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Identification of technologies, solutions and partnerships to attain project goal. In this task, the project manager is expected to closely work with engineering teams.
  • Work closely with engineering team and research stakeholders to make sure that engineering deliverables meet project expectations.
  • Work closely with the scrum lead to make sure that the deliverables stay on track. If there are delays due to unavoidable reasons, then develop mitigation strategies. Resolve conflicts to streamline project deliverables.
  • Work with external teams to coordinate dependencies such as regulatory processes, and procurements.
  • Collate updates from various stakeholders. Organize and participate in meetings to provide periodic scientific and operational updates to stakeholders. The frequency of meetings may depend on project complexity.
  • Use suitable collaboration, ticketing and project management technologies like Google g-drive, Salesforce and JIRA as needed.

Research IT team is a group of developers with broad background in clinical informatics, HIPAA compliance and software engineering. We are currently located in Palo Alto and will be moving to Redwood City in May 2019.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous experience managing large scale projects.
  • Ability to identify technical solutions and tools to meet a variety of project requirements.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with stakeholders internal and external to the University.
  • Work with stakeholders to set realistic project deadlines and ensure identified deadlines are met.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate project status to all levels of individuals internal and external to Stanford.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree in a related field and five years relevant experience or a combination of education and experience. Experience in management of projects with extensive size/complexity and moderate performance risk, including project planning, scheduling, tracking, and budgeting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to productively assemble, engage, and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated project management ability to employ integration, scope time management, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement components.
  • Ability to balance customer expectations with project reality.
  • Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations.
  • Keen grasp of interpersonal and impact awareness.
  • Depth of knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently sit, perform desk based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
