The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in the non-tenure academic-clinician track. The successful applicant will be accomplished in the area of Family Medicine. Responsibilities include the day-to-day operations of Penn Family Care, which is the largest primary care practice within Penn Medicine. The Medical Director will report directly to the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and work closely with the Director of Practice Operations, Nurse Manager, and Practice Manager to ensure that the clinical services of the Department meet the health care needs of patients by assuring the provision of patient-centered health care with the highest levels of patient, provider and staff satisfaction, while also providing exemplary training for residents and students.

This position will support the implementation of evidence-based practices specifically related to the delivery of primary care for disadvantaged populations, in addition to programs on practice redesign to achieve the highest quality of high-value care for populations, and will work with the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations to manage relationships with other patient care entities including coordinating activities with specialists, emergency room, and community-based practices, and health informatics leaders.

The Medical Director will actively engage in routine direct patient care with 10% time protected to accomplish the assigned administrative tasks, attend leadership meetings, and collaborate with the Vice Chair. The director may participate as the department representative to clinical operations meetings and health informatics meetings of UPHS hospitals as delegated by the Vice Chair, engaging other division and department members as necessary to further department goals.

Candidates should be board certified in Family Medicine with 5 to 7 years of experience. Management experience preferred. Applicants must have an M.D. degree and have demonstrated excellent qualifications in education and clinical care.

The Division of Family Medicine (DFM or the Division), in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, encompasses the department’s clinical operations and residency program. The Division’s primary mission is to provide access to the highest quality of patient-centered health care, with a primary focus on reducing health disparities in our communities by improving the health of disadvantaged populations. Our partnerships with our local community, payors, and other stakeholders (including specialists, risk managers, and health information system managers) are crucial to address the unique educational, financial and psychosocial needs of our patient population. Therefore, the Division also partners in interdisciplinary initiatives within the department and across Penn Medicine to advance Penn Medicine’s mission in patient care, education, research, and community health through efficient cutting-edge family medicine practice, which underscores the Division’s interconnectedness with the mission of the Department’s Division of Community Health.


Additionally, the Division will participate in leading change in healthcare delivery, including alignment of the department’s patient services value-based purchasing, bundled care, learning healthcare systems, and research networks with similar entities in Penn Medicine, including the Primary Care Service Line. In these activities, the Division will either lead and/or collaborate with our clinical partners in Penn Medicine.
