Duties: The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine, as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases. GTP is a complex R&D organization consisting of research laboratories supported by multiple core functions which provide internal capacity to perform gene transfer studies from basic research through Phase 1 proof-of-concept human trials.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the 'go-to' organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Due to continued growth of our program, we are searching for a new Director of Alliance Management (DAM) to be part of a dedicated strategy and business operations team responsible for identifying, transacting and managing strategic alliances with corporate partners for GTP.

As the DAM, you will have responsibility for the day-to-day relationship management and contract obligation for a portion of the GTP's Agreements. Your portfolio includes sponsored research agreements and broader multi-program strategic partnerships where Penn is responsible for taking the program through to completion of the Phase 1/2 clinical studies. To enable this, you will work closely with GTP colleagues, as well as the Penn Center for Innovation (PCI; including the Licensing, Corporate Alliance and Corporate Contracts Teams). These may include broad strategic partnerships with multiple research and translational programs, and significant financial responsibilities (individual partnerships include >$60M research funding, $2B in total potential milestone payments), and focused Corporate and Non-for-Profit partnerships. You will manage complex tasks including being a key liaison between GTP, PCI and the alliance partner for compliance with all aspects of the alliance agreement, and for supporting and coordinating relevant intellectual property and contractual management matters between GTP/ODC, PCI and the partner, as well as other research groups at Penn working in the agreement field. Responsibilities will include:

- Manage deliverables, milestones and timelines for all GTP and ODC alliances to ensure they are effectively managed and communicated
- Is a member of the Alliance and Contract Management Team
- Has oversight and accountability for the development and negotiation of contracts with biopharm partners including license agreements, sponsored research agreements, CDAs, and MTAs.
- Independently track and execute changes to the Agreements including working with the Project Teams to develop workplans and budgets, and track Amendment progress.
- Partner with finance in budgeting and financial reporting
- Creates internal tools and communication documents to track contractual obligations

Qualifications: Master's degree and 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible and applicable experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Ph. D. in life science strongly preferred
Experience in drug discovery/development and project management in a biopharma setting, in particular at the research/early development stage gained within the context of an active industry alliance.
Significant experience in establishing and managing broad strategic partnerships with biopharmaceutical companies, including due diligence process, joint steering committee management, and preparation of data packages for key decision points.
Experienced project manager with broad knowledge of principles in early drug discovery and preclinical development.
Proactive, highly detail-oriented professional with demonstrated track record of strong follow-through.
Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, and the ability to work independently and effectively in a highly dynamic environment.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Established expertise in integrating the activities of distinct functional groups into project plan.
Capable of resolving important organizational problems and/or infusing innovation in a matrix oriented environment.
