Duties: The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine, as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.
The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the 'go-to' organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.
Our Cell Morphology Core is currently looking to add a Research Specialist - Histology to assist in research studies of gene therapy efficacy and perform toxicology studies for IND submissions.
As a Research Specialist - Histology, you will be completing individual projects as assigned by the Core Director using either standard protocols, performing paraffin and cryo-sectioning, special stains, immunostaining, histochemistry, in situ hybridization, and other morphologic techniques. You will participate in animal necropsies to harvest tissues, microscopy and image analysis using morphometric software, and organize and archive tissue samples and reagents. In addition, you will be involved in GLP Toxicology, IND-enabling studies.
Joining GTP offers scientific professionals with unique opportunity to contribute to research that will go from bench to bedside and discoveries that could one-day lead to cures.
Position is contingent on continued funding.
Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree, preferably in Histology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or adjacent field and 1 to 3 years of post- degree laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
* Experience in basic histology techniques (sectioning, staining) needed; however, experience in more advanced histology methods (immunostaining, special stains, in situ hybridization) strongly preferred.
* Certification as Histotechnologist is strongly preferred.
* Experience in rodent necropsies preferred
* Ability to learn new techniques and to follow existing protocols a must!
* Outstanding interpersonal interaction skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, problem recognition and solving, and organizational skills.
