Basic Function

The Associate Dean of Health Sciences reports directly to the Northern Virginia Community College Division of Health Sciences Dean. The Associate Dean of Health Sciences has a scholarly vision and exceptional leadership qualities in his/her ability to assist the Division of Health Sciences Dean advance the College’s distinctive mission and vision, strategic goals, and policies and procedures, as well as administrative decisions, to the Health Sciences Division’s Dean, Program Directors, faculty, staff and students.

Duties and Responsibilities

•Assist the Dean of Health Sciences with creating and developing an effective, collegial environment that fosters innovation and excellence in health sciences education, clinical practice, and community service.
•Responsible for supporting the Dean with daily operations, budget preparation, fiscal administration, and overall administrative management of the Health Sciences Division.
•Provides assistance with faculty/staff hiring, mentoring, and collaborates with health sciences leaders in the division’s partnerships, community and professional outreach.
•Ensures sustainability and provides oversight of the Division of Health Sciences programs’ accreditation.
•Cultivates constructive working relationships with the Dean, Program Directors, classified staff, full-time and adjunct teaching faculty in the division.
• Assist the Dean of Health Sciences with day-to-day operations of the Health Sciences Division. Serves as Acting Dean in the Dean’ s absence.
•Assist the Dean of Health Sciences with division-wide responsibilities as needed. This may include assisting with coordination of program and discipline reviews, SLO data collection, and curriculum development.
• Provides support to the Dean for faculty evaluation and review processes.
•Works collaboratively with the Campus Provost, Division Dean, campus faculty, enrollment management specialists, and Program Directors. Team effort with some or all of these positions includes implementation and management of course schedules, and assignment and monitoring of faculty workloads.
•For students, work with the Dean in managing complaints and grievances, as well as requests such as third time course repeats, late registration, late changing of course sections, grade appeals, grade changes, writing or approval of letters of recommendation.
• Assist the Dean with annual unit planning. Assist the Dean with monitoring budget expenditures for part-time employment and operations within the Associate Dean’s purview.
• Assist the Dean to orient new full-time faculty to the division and serve as a point-of-contact for faculty questions and concerns related to the division.
•Trains faculty on the development and evaluation process and helps them in preparation for evaluation, such as ensuring that faculty prepare Annual Performance and Professional Development goals and in doing annual classroom observation visits. Assists the Division Dean in collecting information for division faculty members’ evaluations from Campus Provosts, and Program Directors, of their respective programs, as is relevant to the respective faculty members’ duties.
• Assist in communications with Human Resources about retirements and employee issues as appropriate, and provides assistance as needed to the Provost and Dean in hiring processes for faculty to be assigned within the division.
•Works in collaboration with Program Directors to hire, supervise, and evaluate adjunct faculty in the Division.
• Works in collaboration with Program Directors to provide adequate orientation for new adjunct faculty and to provide annual workshops for all adjunct faculty.
•Hires, supervises and evaluates administrative assistants and lab managers assigned to the division., if applicable
• Communicates with the Director of Campus Operations on any building or classroom issues which arise that affect the division.
•As directed by the Dean, addresses other operational, academic, and administrative concerns.
•Engages in outreach activities as assigned and serves on campus and college committees as assigned.
• Initiates, organizes, and completes special projects, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

•A Master’s degree in a health sciences discipline or a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in a health sciences discipline
•Full-time teaching experience.
•Minimum of ten years of experience in healthcare and/or healthcare education.
•Five years experience in supervision and administration, preferably in a higher education
•Experience in program and higher learning institutional accreditation.
•Minimum three years of successful progressive academic leadership experience in a role such as Assistant Dean, Program Director, Assistant Program Director, Clinical Coordinator or related role within higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Significant leadership and experience with community college processes and programs, particularly in a Health Sciences program
•Significant experience in program and or higher learning institutional accreditation, curriculum development, and teaching at the community college level.
•Full-time teaching experience is preferred.
•Current licensure or certification in a health science discipline.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•Excellent organizational, priority management and teamwork skills, ability to effectively utilize information technology for communication and decision support.
•Knowledge and experience with online and simulation instructional delivery and technology initiatives.
•Strong interpersonal and team building skills
•Knowledge of state, federal and local laws/regulations relating to health sciences programs’ compliance and regulatory agencies.
•Proficiency and experience in Microsoft Office computer software systems that includes Word, Excel, and Power Point.
•Knowledge of constituencies served by the college.

Ability to actively listen to the issues of others in a manner that elicits cooperation and support. Demonstrates an effective and adaptive skill in communicating with students/individuals under stress. Ability to develops and deliver effective presentations.
