Primary Function of Organization Unit: Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center supports agricultural research on horticultural and other crops relevant to western NC and the state of North Carolina. The Center provides resources such as land, equipment, facilities, expertise and personnel to research scientists conducting field research on agricultural commodities. The 397 acre Center houses twelve administrative and operational staff, as well as research faculty from six academic departments and administrative offices for two Cooperative Extension district offices. The Center is also a hub in western NC for Extension education programs.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Specialist will be responsible for production management of fruit crops to support existing and requested research programs. Crops to be managed are primarily apples with some peaches and cranberries. This position will provide technical knowledge and skills to develop and implement orchard management plans. This position will direct the work of permanent and temporary employees.
Department Required Skills: - Microsoft Office systems (word, excel, powerpoint, e-mail). - Ability or experience in horticultural crop management. - Demonstrated attention to detail and safe work habits. - Must be willing and able to use a respirator as required.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Preference for Bachelor's degree in horticulture or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience plus three years experience in tree fruit production or small fruit production and/or applied research.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Position requires NC Commercial Driver License (or ability to acquire within 180 days of hire) and NC Public Pesticide Operator License (or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire).
