Primary Function of Organization Unit: The research and service work conducted within the Crespo Lab strives to facilitate the continued development of practical tools for poultry farms, not only commercial but also small flocks. Biosecurity and epidemiological issues for other captive, companion, or wild birds are also studied, especially as they may relate to disease introduction and spread into poultry flocks. Research objectives include developing tools to advance poultry health through metagenomics and clinical pathology, and improving epidemiologic investigation using molecular techniques and geographic information systems.
Essential Job Duties: The successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination of research within the Poultry Health Services and Research Laboratory. This will require: * Hands-on work with poultry, including accurate data collection and data management for a variety of research projects. * Working outdoors as necessary and within the research facility with chickens and turkeys. As part of research projects (prior, during, and after): cleaning and disinfection of feed, equipment, facilities, and animals, checking for proper working condition of BL2 animal holding (including isolation units and building) as needed. * Proficiency in entering data into electronic medical records, and other databases as needed. * Keeping all necessary equipment in clean and working order and having all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available. * Recording a variety of data relating to patient care, diagnostic testing and treatments, and client communications. Providing quick and accurate information regarding each patient, acting as the liaison between client and veterinarian. * Scheduling of field visits and client communication are essential components of this position. * Performing basic molecular diagnostic assays, serologic and antigen detection assays, and microbial/bacteria isolation steps (this includes initial inoculation of samples, transfer from media to media). * Managing all internal billing along with internal processes for requesting identification, antibiotic sensitivity, sequencing and other diagnostic requests. * Assisting with the distance learning project leading to certification in Poultry medicine, including but not limited to translation from Spanish to English or vice versa, selection of appropriate faculty to answer student's questions, and solving technical (computer) problems. * Maintaining a clean working environment. Following Infectious Disease standards to prevent contamination and infection. Handling all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately. Following all radiation safety, OSHA, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.
Department Required Skills: Knowledge of Spanish (proficient or native level) is required. Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors. Working knowledge of routine microbiological assays in veterinary medicine. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged/ challenging situations. Ability to provide high-quality customer service. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solving and team advancement. Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics. Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high-quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed. Willingness to teach 4th-year veterinary students. Ability to make timely decisions. Ability to work with a variety of personnel in a dynamic setting.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences preferred.
