Position Summary: The Carolina Population Center (CPC) is a community of scholars and professionals at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill collaborating on interdisciplinary research and methods that advance understanding of population issues. Carolina Demography, a research unit within the CPC, focuses on applied demography and outreach to the North Carolina community. Carolina Demography's projects translate demographic data into information useful for understanding the implications of demographic change. Carolina Demography's clients - including local government agencies, educational institutions, businesses and the media throughout North Carolina - use our analyses to inform their decision-making, planning and program evaluation. Our services include data acquisition and interpretation; data creation, such as custom-developed population estimates and projections; and data dissemination via presentations, blogs, fact sheets, and a variety of web-based media. For a new, major project, Carolina Demography will expand and develop our existing database and develop a new website to support a variety of interactive data visualizations, analytic and reporting tools, data downloads, reports and supporting materials, and continuous improvement of the website based on user feedback. The Web Programmer will report to the CPC Director of Information Technology Services. The primary responsibility of the Web Programmer is to work with the Carolina Demography Director, educational research staff, communications staff, and graphic designer to create the pipeline website and develop data visualizations and reporting tools for website visitors. Depending upon CPC and Carolina Demography workload, the Web Programmer may also support other projects and activities. The principal functions of this position are: (1) Analysis/Design: gather requirements and develop software specifications. (2) Software Development: implement and maintain web sites and applications. (3) Quality Control/Support: respond to and resolve issues with web sites and applications. (4) Others: assist in general web software administration.

Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Math, or Engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or Bachelor's degree and some computer coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in business application consulting or development; or Associate's degree in Computer Programming and two years of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualification and Experience: The following skills, knowledge, and abilities are required: - PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, SQL, responsive design. - Experience in data visualization, visualization frameworks, and related tools such as D3.js and Tableau. - Experience with front-end UI and UX design. - Ability to work well as a member of a team and/or independently, with limited day-to-day supervision, required. - Strong attention to detail with ability to proceed with shifting requirements, adapt to changes in priorities, manage multiple tasks concurrently, and manage work flow processes under time sensitive project deadlines. The following are preferred: - WordPress, Linux, Apache, MySQL, Git, R, Python. - Experience designing complex relational database schemas. - Experience with spatial content and GIS. - Experience in a production support environment, possessing analytical and problem-solving skills to be able to perform detailed root cause analysis and resolution.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina is about 30 miles from the state capital, Raleigh, and 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams.
