POSITION DESCRIPTION

Working under general supervision, the machine shop safety specialist supports and facilitates the research environment while protecting the health and safety of its personnel and the community. responsibilities include university compliance with federal, state, and local, construction, and life-fire safety regulations.  This position works with the assistant directors of EHS as well as principle investigators and students to update or implement new university policy as need to ensure the university is at or exceeding industry best management practices.  This position develops and implements safety protocols, standard operating procedures and policies as needed to meet this goal. This position provides operational safety training and shop coordination for the Physical Plant machine shops on campus. This position will keep up with trends in machining and materials so that the services of the machine shops stay current.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.       Develop and provide general shop safety training for all staff and student managers of fabrication facilities, mirroring trainings offered for chemical and biological safety. (25%)

2.       Work with think[box] staff to create “Fabrication Shop Safety Checklists” (with self-inspection checklists to provide guidance and strict expectations) to be used during period inspections of each shop, to ensure compliance with ISO, DIN, ANSI, and OSHA guidelines as well as “Best Known Methods”. (25%)

3.       Plan and facilitate periodic meet-ups of campus machine shops (perhaps rotating tours) to provide collaborative safety concepts. (15%)

4.       Develop and conduct the Powered Industrial Vehicle Safety Program training. All powered industrial vehicles such as lifts and tow motor devices on campus require training, inspection, and maintenance on at least an annual basis. (10%)

5.       Oversee and advise the Campus Crane Inspection program. All cranes on campus require inspection and maintenance on at least an annual basis. Ensure that all cranes on campus are in safe operating order and meet regulatory requirements. (6%)

6.       Advise on the creation of “Right to Know” stations and SDS paperwork for each shop, as well as, populating the university’s existing SDS management. (6%)

7.       Advise on recycling of metals, electronics, and hazardous waste for shops, to ensure uniformity and correctness in paperwork. (6%)

8.       Advise on creation of “Lockout/Tagout” stations for each shop to ensure compliance (6%)

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with assistant directors, and other staff to maintain workflow.

University: Contact with faculty and staff regarding training, inspections, education, training and permitting.

External: infrequent contact with contractors and vendors regarding training and inspections.

Students: Some contact with student to provide training and during laboratory and other safety inspections.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

None.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 1 to 3 years of experience

Education/Licensing: Bachelor degree in an environmental health and safety or related field required. OHSA 30 HR. Construction card preferred. HAZWOPER (24 hr), EPA RCRA, DOT/IATA certification preferred.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

1.       Demonstrated ability to work well with personnel from varying backgrounds and educational levels.

2.       Comfortable with public speaking including the ability deliver training presentations.

3.       Familiar and comfortable wearing respiratory protection and other emergency response personal protective equipment.

4.       Excellent computer skills including knowledge the MS Office Suite along with the ability to learn new software

5.       Ability to logically evaluate emergency situations and find solutions based on immediate safety and regulatory compliance.

6.       Must be able to light a fire for extinguisher training program and move 50 lbs of equipment.

7.       Must be able to wear a respirator

8.       Must be able to pass an FBI Background check

9.       Must have current drivers license and be able to drive light trucks

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

In addition to a typical office environment, this position will frequently work in hazardous condition requiring the use of personnel protective equipment and may be exposed to chemical, biological and radiological hazards and 24-hour emergency contact. Minimal travel required.
