Nature of Work:

A position as a professional research assistant is available in the laboratory of Thomas Morrison, Ph.D. in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. It is a full-time research position that will utilize molecular, biochemical, genetic, immunological, and in vivo approaches to investigate the host-pathogen interactions as well as anti-viral agents. This research position will involve in vitro and animal studies performed at biosafety level 2 and 3 working conditions. Initially, the position will primarily be a support role for other team members, with growth potential available.

Supervision Received:

The employee will be responsible to Tom Morrison, Ph.D., Associate Professor, and will be assigned to work with other members of laboratory staff.

Supervision Exercised:

The employee may be assigned to help train and supervise undergraduate student workers in the laboratory.

Examples of Work Performed:

This full-time position involves research on the molecular pathogenesis of virus-induced disease and anti-infectives to combat infection, with a focus on mosquito-transmitted alphaviruses. Work will largely be experimental. Work will include, but not be limited to:

    • Recombinant virus construction and generation of viral stocks
    • Culture of tissue culture cell lines and primary cells of mosquito and mammalian origin
    • Purification and analysis of RNA and proteins by multiple types of assays
    • Management of mouse breeding colony
    • Handling, inoculation, and necropsy of laboratory mice
    • Processing of animal tissues for downstream analyses
    • Immunological assays and Flow cytometry
    • Performance of in vitro and animal experiments at BSL3 conditions

    Salary and Benefits:

    The starting salary range for the position is $35,000 to $40,000 plus excellent benefits including health/dental insurance, retirement, and leave plan. The starting salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience and will be negotiated accordingly.This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A minimum of a B.S. or B.A. degree in microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • At least two years of previous laboratory experience is desirable.
    • Prior experience in one or more of the following is an advantage:
      • recombinant DNA techniques
      • biochemical techniques
      • maintenance of cells in culture
      • work with viral or other human pathogens
      • animal breeding, handling, and inoculation
    Applicants should demonstrate that they are well-organized, reliable, independent, and possess considerable attention to detail. They should also have excellent verbal, written, and computational skills.

    Working Conditions:

    The employee will be expected to be highly self-motivated. Occasionally, experimental protocols will require working in the evening or on weekends. The employee will be working closely other team members in a small laboratory environment with growth potential.
