JOB DETAILS:

POSITION: The Department of Biology invites applications for a probationary tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 26, 2019. The department seeks a broadly-trained candidate with expertise in bioinformatic or comparative genomic approaches to address questions of evolutionary relationships and/or adaptations, either in plants or vertebrates. Preference will be given to an evolutionary biologist in the broadest sense who is driven by big questions within the biological domain, not by computational methods alone. Candidates must be committed to excellence in undergraduate instruction and faculty-student collaborative research and embrace the university’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity.

QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate by August 20, 2019. Demonstrated interest in teaching biological sciences and commitment to developing an active research program involving undergraduates. Postdoctoral experience is desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach both introductory and upper level courses in the Department of Biology based on program needs and in accordance with specialization; develop an active research program involving undergraduates; provide academic advising to students; and engage in service to the department, University and profession. Opportunities also exist for contribution to collaborative and growing interdisciplinary high impact experiences among STEM departments.

DEPARTMENT: The Department of Biology currently has 16 faculty, 4 instructors, a lab manager, a greenhouse/animal care manager, and approximately 700 Biology majors including 100 Biochemistry/Molecular Biology majors. Department members are both dedicated to teaching and actively involved in research with undergraduates as demonstrated by co-authored presentations and publications.

Departmental facilities include teaching and research laboratories, greenhouses, an animal care facility, standard field equipment, cell and molecular instrumentation and facilities, gel and blot documentation systems, and shared access to confocal microscopes as well as transmission and scanning electron microscopes. Research is supported by both external and internal grants, and we participate in the Ronald McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program as well as other initiatives to enhance equity, diversity and inclusivity. The department and university support faculty professional development, attendance at meetings, and high impact experiences for students.
