Job Summary:

The Assistant Director for Strategic Research and Analysis conducts biographical and financial research on individuals, corporations, and foundations. S/he uses online and print information of public record to assess financial capacity, philanthropic priorities, and connections to the University/Medical Center; prepares focused briefings in established formats on prospective and existing major and principal gift donors for use by development staff, Medical Center and University Leadership, and volunteer leaders; and advises frontline staff on strategy. The Assistant Director for Strategic Research and Analysis will serve as research liaison to frontline teams supporting several areas of medicine; this may include advising on strategies for individual cultivation and solicitation, identifying funders in disease-specific areas, providing responsive research support on time-sensitive projects, and training frontline and support staff in basic prospect research tools and methods. S/he will maintain prospect data in the University's database of record (“Griffin”) as well as in shared digital folders. S/he will participate in internal/external trainings, research webinars, and local and regional conferences and workshops.

S/he reports to the Associate Director, Strategic Research and Analysis. In collaboration with a research team, the Assistant Director supports the fund-raising efforts of a team of 18+ Fundraisers and MBSD staff.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts biographical and financial research on major and principal donor prospects (individuals, corporations, and foundations) using online resources and reference materials
  • Identifies and interprets wealth indicators to determine gift capacity
  • Prepares written profiles and briefing materials on these prospects
  • Makes strategy recommendations based on research and attends strategy meetings when appropriate
  • Develops and disseminates information (e.g., 'news alerts') on top prospects
  • Collaborates with prospect research colleagues at Alumni Relations and Development and other areas of the University on joint projects and new research initiatives
  • Collaborates with the Strategic Research team in other prospect research endeavors


Competencies
  • Proficiency with databases, Windows, network based electronic environments, and the Internet required.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills required.
  • Ability to express information clearly and concisely, whether orally or in writing required.
  • Discretion and confidentiality required.


Additional Requirements
Education, Experience or Certifications:

Education:
  • A Bachelor's degree is required.


Experience:
  • A minimum of two years of research and/or prospect tracking/ management experience or library science experience in an academic or corporate setting or equivalent experience is required.
  • Experience in an academic medical center or higher education a plus.
  • Experience with international prospect research a plus.
