The Digital Solutions Department of the Stanford GSB seeks an experienced security professional to fill the role of Sr. Information Security Engineer (Sr. ISE) reporting to the Director of Information Security and Compliance (ISC). As a key member of the ISC Team, the Sr. ISE Engineer will lead the initiatives to establish security architecture, secure coding practices for software development, troubleshoot and resolve security incidents. Candidates with strong backgrounds in any of forensics, vulnerability management, host or network-based intrusion detection/prevention, anti-virus/malware solution support, and data loss prevention are encouraged to apply. Experience in Salesforce, AWS, Google and other cloud application, platform and infrastructure services is preferred.


Working in close collaboration with the Stanford University's IT and Information Security Office, the Security Engineer will develop and maintain policies, procedures, standards and guidelines for designing and architecting secure solution for application, network and various inter-connected systems. Key areas include, but not limited to, providing advisory support to GSB Digital Solutions and other GSB departments, facilitate in the remediation of bug, defect and vulnerabilities, coordinate and provide resolution for security incidents, research malware and threats and provide guidance for remediation.



This position requires a combination of strong leadership, deeper ability to understand the various technical and operational processes in the information and application security domains.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead and develop the GSB's security architecture and secure coding practices for software development.
  • Provide technical consultation and direction on application design, architecture, and system performance as it relates to security.
  • Responsible for analyzing and correlating information collected from a variety of sources to identify, investigate, and report vulnerabilities in the GSB environment.
  • Developing and implementing mitigation countermeasures for identified and potential threats, and leading the resolution of identified security incidents.
  • Establish alerting thresholds/triggers, analyze alerts from various sources within GSB, and determine possible causes and effects on GSB systems and data.
  • Validate intrusion detection system (IDS) alerts against network traffic and host data sources using to root out false positives.
  • Perform regular and ad-hoc vulnerability and malware scans to identify unauthorized access to GSB data systems and malicious code activity such as trojans, rootkits, backdoors, bots, or malware.
  • Participate in and lead technical security risk assessments, develop appropriate solutions for compliance with the University security standards.
  • Inspect application, system and network data for computer and network usage policy compliance, system integrity and incident response.
  • Develop and deliver security training and awareness program to system administrators and users. Lead the development and documentation of information security standards, best practices and guidelines.
  • Develop, implement and manage standards, guidelines and technical security requirements related to IT security and operational support systems in collaboration with the Information Security Office.
  • Research, design and advocate new technologies, architectures and security products.
  • Mentor and train team members and peers on cyber security solutions and actively participate on system and application improvement project teams.
  • Maintain a state-of-the-art awareness of information security issues, incidents, problems, privacy and legal requirements and solutions for all major information system platforms in use at Stanford GSB.
  • Be flexible to completing any other additional assigned duties.

    To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree plus five years relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
    In-depth knowledge and understanding of IT industry trends and emerging technologies and an ability to relate them to Stanford GSB and its objectives.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of networking protocols, principles and devices.
  • In-depth architecture and configuration knowledge.
  • Extensive experience with debugging, troubleshooting, forensics, and security utilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of authentication protocols, encryption and other fundamental security technologies.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of industry standard information security practices around threat modeling, secure software development, OWASP etc.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical ideas to non-technical audience and work with individuals at all levels.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading/mentoring team members and providing technical guidance to customers and stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity and excellent judgment concerning proprietary and privacy issues.

    In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Certification relevant to IT security (CISSP, CEH, CISM, GIAC/GSEC, etc.)
  • Experience working with IT security laws and regulations applicable in Higher Education
  • Experience providing IT security services in a university setting with a distributed technology environment
  • Experience building coalitions and professional relationships with internal and external constituencies to achieve results.
