Scope of Job:
Applicants for this position will be expected to teach courses in engineering technologies areas. Responsibilities will include courses and laboratory development and delivery; scholarship/research in a well-defined area of focus that is in line with the program's research agenda, securing external funding; service to the department, college and university, including service to the local industry; and maintaining a clear professional development agenda to support the program's growth. The successful candidate is expected to play a collaborative role as a team member in initiatives in partnership with schools, community colleges, government agencies and industries to create a eco-system that will bring economic prosperity to the Rio Grande Valley. Our plan is to have the BS in Engineering Technology accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.

As Engineering Technology is currently a program within the Mechanical Engineering Department, the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for two (2) open rank faculty positions to start in the fall 2019 semester. The ABET accredited ME program at UTRGV has an enrollment of over 840 undergraduate students and 59 master's degree students.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related field from an accredited university or be expected to receive the degree by the start-date. Candidates at the Assistant Professor level will be considered based on demonstrated potential to enhance the teaching and research capabilities of the Engineering Technology program.

Determination of academic rank of Associate or Full Professor will be based on an evaluation of the applicant’s Curriculum Vitae. Applicants at these ranks must have demonstrated evidence of leadership, skill in interdisciplinary research and collaboration along with an outstanding research program, including high-profile publications and a successful record of extramural funding. Candidates must also meet the institutional requirements for tenure to be considered for the position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. It is expected that an Associate or Full Professor will take a leadership role in the Engineering Technology program. Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Applicants must also have a demonstrated ability (or a well-designed plan) to develop and maintain a funded research program and to lead multidisciplinary collaborative projects. The successful candidate will demonstrate having (or potential to) achieved excellence and balance in teaching, research and service, collaboration with faculty across disciplines and the ability to involve undergraduate students in research activities. UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and department missions. Faculty are also expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to UTRGV’s strategic plan (http://www.utrgv.edu/strategic-plan), and to promote access to post-secondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.

Preferred Qualification:
The highest consideration will be given to applicants who have relevant industrial experiences and demonstrated research and scholarship activities. The preferred candidate will have experience with and commitment to ABET accreditation.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
