Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure-track faculty member in Counseling commencing with the 2019 academic year. The primary assignment involves all areas of Counseling including providing educational, career, and personal counseling to current and prospective students and instruction in student success career planning and/or other personal growth courses. This position has a specific focus on the recruitment and onboarding of new students from outreach, to orientation, through the first-year retention. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off campus and is subject to change as needed. We currently enroll 21,498 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations: 35% of OCC's students are Latinx, 2% are African-American, 23% are Asian, less than 1% Native American, 31% are White, and 6% are multiracial. Faculty have the opportunity to enhance their classroom methods during two professional development days during the academic year, which include learning sessions like "Digital Accessibility", "Basic Skills: Helping students help themselves" and "Taking a skills-based approach to teaching college students". Student-centered activities that support OCC's mission include campus-wide student success projects funded by the Office of Student Equity; partnerships with local Hispanic Serving four year institutions; active programs that work to improve the academic achievement of racially minoritized students, such as PUENTE and UMOJA; Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS).
Counseling services at Orange Coast College are in place to help students identify and clarify personal, career and educational goals. The intent is to help students choose options that will improve the quality of their lives. The Counseling Division serves all students, whether bound for transfer or in pursuit of career and technical programs. Counselors work to encourage students to explore interests and goals across the curriculum. This is done holistically within the context of each student's background, competencies, motivation, family situation and outside obligations. Counseling intersects and collaborates with instructional disciplines, student services, four year colleges and universities, and local high schools to provide targeted interventions to students from recruitment through graduation. We encourage innovative counseling and teaching as well as student and faculty engagement outside of the classroom. The Counselor, Enrollment and Retention will assume a leadership role in collaborating with counselors, campus programs and services and community stakeholders to create and implement onboarding strategies and programs focused on first year student success and retention.
Examples of Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide comprehensive educational, career, transfer and personal counseling to current and prospective students.
• Assist students in making decisions relative to career/ major choice and educational planning leading to certificates, degrees, and/ or transfer.
• Provide general orientation, education planning, and follow-up counseling for new and continuing students.
• Provide leadership in the development and revision of Counseling materials, resources and curriculum responsive to the students served.
• Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
• Maintain current knowledge in counseling best practices, curriculum, articulation, and state and local initiatives that inform the profession.
• Provide appropriate counseling and transfer information to general and special student populations, including veterans, disadvantaged, first generation, international, equity groups, academically at-risk students, disabled students and re-entry students.
• Participate in the college's outreach program with local high schools and the community as it relates to collaborating and strengthening the pipeline between high school, community college, four-year institutions, and industry.
• Give presentations at high schools regarding enrollment and academic pathways at Orange Coast College.
• Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in other instructional disciplines and perform liaison activities as appropriate.
• Assist in the preparation of counseling related publications and presentation of workshops
• Assist with the development and implementation of special programs and group and individual orientation services
• Coordinate with counseling faculty, outreach, assessment and other students service staff and administrators to create efficient, student-centered interventions for prospective and new students.
• Assist students in seeking referral to appropriate community agencies or services in response to educational, vocational or personal concerns.
• Serve on Division and college-wide committees and/or task forces.
• Provide instruction in student success, career planning and/or other personal growth courses.
• Participate in professional growth activities on and/or off campus.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
• Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.

Qualifications and Physical Demands
• Must meet one on the following qualifications under (1) through (4):
• Possess the California Community College Teaching Credential for this subject area; OR
• Possess a Master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
• Possess a Bachelor's degree in one of the above-listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to Title 5 Section 53410.1.;
• Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
• Ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.
• Ability to complement existing staff, student and community demographics in terms of professional and personal skills.
• A minimum of 2 years of counseling and teaching at the post-secondary level
• Demonstrate knowledge of community college curricula and higher education systems
• Knowledge of new student onboarding best-practices with competencies in group advisement, presenting to various stakeholder groups and educational options for new students
• Experience developing and implementing outreach and retention programs
• Evidence of a strong commitment to professional growth and development and the continued innovation and improvement of successful counseling and teaching
• Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty, administrators, and staff) as well as off-campus community and education partners
• Evidence of participation in Counseling/Transfer related initiatives
• Ability to work with student record management, scheduling, and educational planning software.
• Evidence of ability to assist/plan/coordinate counseling projects
• Willingness to examine and re-mediate one's counseling, instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
• Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in higher education.
• Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching and counseling, particularly as it relates to the relevance of counseling to students' lives, interests, and communities.
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within counseling services, courses, and classrooms.
• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
• Desire and demonstrated the ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
• Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).
• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
