The primary function of this position is to provide instruction to veterinary students in large animal surgery and lameness, both in clinical rotations, and through core and elective didactic lectures and laboratories and to supervise the training of interns and residents. The teaching and service activities in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital are shared with three other surgeons and supported by two emergency critical care clinicians as well as four rotating interns shared with other hospital services

The successful candidate will participate in the department’s relevant clinical rotations, as well as didactic and laboratory courses commensurate with clinical track appointment. More specifically, this position will provide clinical instruction for approximately 35 weeks per year through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and between 15 and 30 contact hours of instruction to second and third year students. Instructional responsibilities in the discipline are shared with three surgeons and two emergency and critical care clinicians.

In addition to instruction, this position will provide clinical services to clients and referring veterinarians who present their animals to the Large Animal Hospital, an essential function needed to provide clinical case material to facilitate teaching students, as well as providing a direct service to the citizens of Georgia. The caseload is approximately 85% equine, the remainder being primarily cattle, small ruminants, and new world camelids. The successful candidate should have an interest in promoting a caseload and innovative services that will serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, the holder of the position will be expected to provide continuing education to both referring veterinarians and the public.

The successful applicant is expected to participate in scholarly activities related to the clinical service and teaching missions of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Establishing an independent research program is not expected, though collaborative research is encouraged. Lastly, the holder of the position is expected to further the discipline of large animal surgery and lameness through collaborative studies with colleagues within the department and in other departments and colleges on campus and through presentations at professional meetings.
