The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is seeking applications for a two tenure-track faculty positions (Assistant Professor) within the College of Sciences, with dual appointments in the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences (SEEMS) and the Department of Biology. These are full-time, tenure-track positions involving teaching, scholarly research, and service, and complement recent hires to form a core group at UTRGV of faculty in Agriculture and Food Systems Sciences.
Applicants should include a cover letter describing their academic qualifications and professional experiences, and how they align with current UTRGV faculty research interests. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong, extramurally funded research program in their area of specialization, and to complement ongoing systems research in food and agricultural sciences and related fields at UTRGV. The candidate is also expected to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Well-qualified candidates should be able to demonstrate interest in community engaged research and teaching, and a commitment to advancing UTRGV’s guiding principles and the university, college, and program missions (http://www.utrgv.edu/en us/about-utrgv/transition-plan/guiding-principles).

UTRGV is located in a region of unusual biological diversity and interest, the subtropical Rio Grande Valley, near the Gulf of Mexico. South Texas is also considered an agricultural hotspot, located on the US-Mexico Border and home to the largest agricultural land ports in the country. The subtropical climate allows for year round growing, and as a result south Texas is among the state-wide leader in the production of citrus, potatoes, sorghum, sugar cane, melons, cotton, vegetables, and other specialty crops. Already considered one of the premier Hispanic Serving Institutions in the US, UTRGV is developing initiatives to become the premier research institution in South Texas. The College of Sciences recently inaugurated a new $87M Science Building, which includes state-of-the-art lab spaces and a core facility for instrumentation. The university offers a start-up package and reduced teaching load for incoming faculty. Highly qualified candidates may also be eligible for the University of Texas System Rising Star Award to enhance start-up packages.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in any discipline relevant to agricultural or food sciences with a focus in either (a) plant pathology or (b) integrated pest management, from an accredited university.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates should be able to teach and create a variety of courses across two main foci: (a) plant pathology and (b) integrated pest management, as well as related courses in plant physiology, mycology, plant sciences, plant-insect interactions, or microbiology. The successful candidate will collaborate with other faculty and other related programs that leverage the unique subtropical agricultural landscape of the Rio Grande Valley, existing connections to the USDA Agricultural Research Service and USDA APHIS, USFWS, committed grower cooperators, and the burgeoning regional expertise and interest in sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Commitment to student success (innovative teaching approaches and pedagogies, use of technology in the classroom, experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate student, etc.) especially for students that are underrepresented in the sciences.
Strong theoretical grounding in one or more disciplines, and experience in systems research with collaboration with other scholarly disciplines.
Demonstrated excellence in research (scholarly publications, relevant funding, etc.), with experience or strong interest in interdisciplinary research and community engaged scholarship.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
