I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

Under the leadership of Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs Forrest Maltzman, the George Washington University (GW) Office of the Provost supports all academic endeavors across the university's 10 schools and colleges. Our office promotes the efforts of our exceptional faculty, facilitates unparalleled educational opportunities for our dynamic students, and fosters a diverse community of scholars who are able to find creative solutions to society's most complex problems.

Reporting to the Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs, the Associate Provost for Graduate Studies will make meaningful contributions to GW's deep commitment to the education and experience of graduate students. The incumbent will serve as a liaison between the Provost and graduate student across the university and be a member of the Provost's leadership team.

The incumbent is responsible for the following.

  • Works collaboratively with the Provost, Deans, and other campus leaders to advance the institution's graduate mission and to promote graduate education across the university.
  • Advances the University's efforts to standardize data collection, analysis, and reporting on the graduate student experience, working in collaboration with Enrollment & the Student Experience (ESE).
  • Collaborates with school based graduate offices on issues related to graduate student support and academic policies.
  • Enhances support for new and continuing graduate students on campus, including oversight of graduate assistantships, fellowships, and other funding opportunities with twin goals of improving graduate student success and retention.
  • Oversees professional development opportunities for graduate students, including teaching assistantship training and support, career development, and professional mentoring.
  • Oversees the Office of Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships as well as the awarding of fellowships from the Provost's office.

This position will be held by a tenured member of the GW faculty and is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Relevant experience must include at least 4 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
  • Applicants must be tenured members of the GW faculty and hold a terminal degree. Tenure requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Relevant experience must include at least 4 years of senior leadership/executive level experience, which could consist of teaching at the collegiate level.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with graduate education and with funding for graduate students
