Modlin Center Pro Technician - 500035

SUMMARY:

The Modlin Center Pro Technician performs technical duties in the areas of audio, lighting, video and projections, carpentry and rigging, and/or other technologies needed to support events at the Modlin Center complex, or in other Richmond area venues as assigned by the Production Manager or Assistant Production Managers. The Modlin Center for the Arts facility houses the Modlin Arts series, Departments of Theatre & Dance, Art & Art History, University Museums, and Music, and is open for use by the campus and local communities.

This is an as-needed, part-time temporary position. Work calls will typically be scheduled on a monthly basis, depending on the performance schedule of The Modlin Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Skills/ Production Labor:

  • Preparing venues for upcoming events. Depending on the particular event and technical needs, these duties can include, but are not limited to:
    • Hanging lights and circuiting.
    • Mounting Speakers and cabling.
    • Arranging platforms/staging.
    • Hanging draperies.
    • Mounting projectors/screens.
    • Setting stage properties.
  • Loading in events/shows.
    • Work with touring production personnel to implement the elements of the show.
    • Unload trucks, set up scenery and/or band gear, focus lights, perform sound checks, lwardrobe set-up, etc.
    • Assist artists/presenters with all aspects of their event.
  • Perform specific duties as assigned for rehearsals and performances.
    • Light board operation, audio engineering, spot light operation, stagehand duties, fly operation, laundry, etc.
    • Tasks assigned based on experience and need.
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the facility and equipment.
    • Specific work calls will occasionally be offered to perform tunings on lighting equipment, re-painting the stage, re-organizing storage, etc.

Representation/Communication:

  • As a member of the Modlin Center Production Team, the Pro Technicians are expected to represent the Modlin Center in a professional manner by:
    • Presenting a calm and patient demeanor with the ability to work under pressure.
    • Communicating and work closely with other staff members, visiting tour managers, and crews in a professional manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • This position requires the ability to lift up to 75lbs.
  • Long hours on one’s feet are typical.
  • Scheduled events frequently occur on nights and weekends.
  • Frequently requires work in the dark and in loud environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more areas of expertise. Tasks will be assigned
    based on those.
    • General Entertainment Industry.
      • Knowledge of technical terms used in stagecraft.
      • Stage directions, types of lighting and audio equipment, etc.
    • Lighting
      • Light Board operation.
      • Knowledge of current technologies. Data transfer, Intelligent units, LED.
    • Audio
      • Audio console operation. Engineering FOH or monitors.
      • Knowledge of specific microphones and speakers.
      • Audio Signal transportation.
    • Video Production or Projection
      • Control devices, projector set-up
    • Fly systems/Rigging
      • Overhead hanging, counterweight systems, truss.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • BA degree with training in technical theatre, electrics and sound and general
    technical knowledge preferred.

-AND/OR-

  • High school graduation and minimum of 2 years of professional experience in
    technical theatre, electrics or sound in professional theatres, touring, engineering,
    production houses.

WORK HOURS:

  • Part-time, temporary, non-exempt position; Works as needed
  • Exact schedule to be determined; Work calls will typically be scheduled on a monthly basis, depending on the performance schedule of The Modlin Center.
