Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder Police Department (CUPD) welcomes applications for a Police Dispatch. This position exists to protect the lives, health, safety and property of the public by expeditiously receiving, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and prioritizing multiple simultaneous emergency requests for law enforcement, fire, ambulance and rescue services and allocating, deploying and monitoring the activities of responding units; to provide service to the University community, the general public, other public safety departments and outside agencies by receiving, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and prioritizing multiple simultaneous non-emergency requests for information and assistance; to allocate, deploy and monitor the activities of the required non-emergency services; to direct and the request to the appropriate person, department or agency for resolution; to provide communications and information resource support for field units and outside agencies under various appropriate mutual aid agreements.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Receiving and Prioritizing Calls and Send Appropriate Response

  • Make decisions directly impacting the lives, health, safety and property of the public the State of Colorado and law-enforcement and emergency services personnel.
  • Provide Life Safety Emergency Response for those with disabilities such as hearing/speech/vision via Text Telephone Device (TDD).
  • Possess competence in hearing-impaired language skills which differ from those with normal senses and communicative abilities.


Documentation of all Incidents

  • Record and document details of call information, resource deployment, response times, unit activity and status, personnel deployment and status, pending incident status and call loading.
  • Access and operate county-wide computer aided dispatching system.


Query and Disseminate from Data Bases

  • Process, coordinate and relay concise, accurate information.
  • Access, extract, analyze and interpret general, criminal justice, departmental university and other printed or computer-based information resources.


Updating and Making Entries into Law Enforcement Data Bases

  • Enter, audit, modify, update, correct, remove, replace, record, document, retrieve, distribute and secure local, state and national criminal justice records and data bases, departmental and University databases, lists, logs, forms, files, records, memoranda and written procedures.


Community Outreach

  • Provide assistance to other campus departments for the development or understanding of their interactions with the communications center.


Training New Employees

  • Train new communications personnel by providing supervision, instruction, counseling, direction evaluation, critique, daily observation reports (DOR), on console experience using a structured departmental communications training program.
  • Prepare documents, memoranda, training materials, procedures manuals, disaster response protocols and other written materials for dissemination and distribution after review and approved by supervisors.


Mutual Aid

  • Ensure uninterrupted mutual aid, interoperability, and support with public safety communications for the city Boulder and Boulder County under mutual aid agreements
  • Provide emergency and auxiliary inter-agency communications support, personnel and facilities.


Work Leader Duties

  • Act as a work leader for the communications center on 2nd and 3rd shifts and weekends.
  • Review and support the timeliness, correctness, and accuracy of the work of colleagues or less experienced Technicians.
  • Assigns tasks.
  • Monitor the progress and flow of center operations.
  • Check paperwork and records for correctness.
  • Provide input into supervisory decisions made at higher levels and schedules work when required/requested by the Supervisor.
  • Possess ability to correct minor computer or phone problems including restarts, logons and general knowledge of equipment in center.
  • Train, supervise and evaluate new employees as requested or required by the Supervisor.
  • Serve as an "Acting Supervisor" of the section when requested or delegated in the absence of the Supervisor.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident.
  • One year of experience in police radio/telephone communications equipment operations.
    • For some positions, successful completion of an authorized Communication Training Officer or Program (or equivalent) may substitute for the year of required experience.
