The Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service (https://coopercenter.org/) at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Research Scientist (Economist) to assist with economic analysis of public policy in Virginia and beyond. Successful candidates will be expected to carry out substantial research projects, including: analysis the of regional economic effects of public policies and of public or private expenditures; analysis of state and local taxation and expenditure policies in Virginia; and the development of advanced regional models including computable general equilibrium models. The incumbent will also be expected to report on factors and policies affecting economic growth for localities around the state and for the state as a whole. In addition to research responsibilities, the Research Scientist will collaborate closely with faculty across disciplines and may also have the opportunity teach classes in regional analysis and in state and local public finance. Applicants with expertise and interest in regional analysis and state and local public finance are strongly encouraged to apply.
To be considered, applicants must have a Master's Degree in economics or a closely related field, though preference will be given to applicants with a Ph.D. Experience with data collection and analysis is critical, as is the ability to analyze the economic consequences of various taxation, expenditure, and regional development policies. Knowledge of regional economic analysis, public finance, and econometrics is required, as is knowledge of advanced regional modeling and analysis. The demonstrated ability to be self-motivated is essential, as is a willingness to take the lead and work independently and as a team member. Candidates must also possess the ability to write and communicate clearly, and have the ability to present research to a variety of audiences such as government officials, academics, and the general public. Proficient knowledge of computer word processing, spreadsheet, database software, power point, modeling tools, statistics and other software used in scientific research analysis for documenting and presenting is also required. Preference will be given to applicants with an active research agenda and to those with experience publishing research findings in peer reviewed and/or academic journals.
