Requisition # 2018-9117
Department PPPL ITER and Tokamaks
Category Research and Laboratory
Full-Time / Part-Time Full-Time
Application Deadline

Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a research position at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will design, execute and analyze experiments on the DIII-D tokamak aimed at understanding transport processes in the plasma core and H-mode pedestal relevant to ITER and future fusion reactors. State of the art plasma diagnostics and simulation codes will be used to predict plasma scenarios and understand transport of energy, particles and momentum form the core to the steep gradient region at the edge of fusion plasmas.

Responsibilities

The candidate will analyze experimental data and use interpretive and theoretical models to investigate experiments at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego to understand and optimize the self-consistent equilibrium and transport solution in the core and pedestal for ITER and future reactors.

Responsibilities will be running and validating state-of-the-art transport models in plasma scenario simulations validated with DIII-D experimental data. The candidate will use existing and planned plasma diagnostics for equilibrium and plasma profile predictions with PPPL's TRANSP code, and leverage new TRANSP capabilities for designing and predicting the performance of plasma scenarios. The successful candidate will collaborate with other national and international facilities to advance the scientific understanding of the self-consistent transport and equilibrium for tokamak operation. Additionally the successful candidate will use and develop modern workflows interfacing experimental data with high performance numerical simulations. Close interaction with the theory teams developing the simulation capability is essential.

Applicants should have a strong theoretical background in plasma transport, with strong computational and data analysis skills. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment and must be an effective communicator.. The successful candidate will be based in San Diego and is expected to travel regularly to PPPL and to other national and international facilities for joint experiments , workshops and conferences.

Qualifications

Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics and possess experience working on plasma experiments. Experience working in a team environment is a plus. Experience in transport theory and transport modeling is important. Strong computational skills are essential.
