Overview

This staff research scientist position will support ongoing collaborations between PPPL and the W7-X stellarator located Griefswald, Germany. The primary topic will be integration, scenario development and utilization of a continuous pellet injector system as research tool. The injector is currently being jointly developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Princeton Plasma physics Laboratory, the National Institute for Fusion Science in Japan, and the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald. The successful applicant will have experience in fusion research with a focus on fuelling, density control, and particle transport. Expertise in modeling turbulent transport is also desirable. The position will involve liaising between the US team and the German team to help insure that the injector is immediately useful as a research tool as soon as it is commissioned on the W7-X device. Additionally, the applicant will be expected to propose experimental scenarios that optimize the use of the pellet injector based on modeling of the fuel deposition and also on the measured particle transport behavior of the W7-X plasma.

Responsibilities

• Develop the continuous pellet injector as a research tool
• Liaise between the German, Japanese and US teams too facilitate installation, integration and commissioning of the injector
• Develop scenarios that utilize the injector to improve the performance of the W7-X stellarator

Qualifications

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D in the area of experimental plasma physics in fusion devices or a related field. Knowledge of plasma diagnostic techniques, plasma fueling and particle transport, and stellarator geometry is desirable, as is knowledge of existing analysis techniques for stellarator transport modeling. Ability to work in an international team environment is critical.
