Job Summary

The Disability Support Services Accommodations Specialist is responsible for ensuring academic accommodations as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act for Texas A&M University-San Antonio students who are registered with the Disability Support Services office. The DSS Accommodations Specialist works directly with enrolled students with disabilities to facilitate oversight of the Exam Services area to include handling confidential exam materials as well as proctoring and problem-solving issues for students and faculty. The position also provides coordination of approved accommodations to include auxiliary services such as Interpreting and CART Services, assistance with alternative format requests and reader/scribe services.

This position typically works Monday-Friday 8a.m.-5p.m. but does require some extended/evening hours on an as needed basis and during peak times.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate oversight of the Exam Services area and DSS office front of house to include handling and converting confidential exam materials, scheduling appropriate accommodations for exams, arranging assistive technology, proctoring and problem-solving issues for students and faculty.
  • Consult and coordinate with faculty, staff and vendors to ensure delivery of reasonable accommodations and auxiliary services such as interpreter services, CART services, reader/scribe services, conversion of alternative format or any other accommodation that requires action from the DSS office.
  • Assist with all aspects of the daily activities of the department (student requests, phone calls, departmental emails, walk-ins to include determination of services needed at the time such as scheduling of auxiliary services, assignment to a case manager, campus referral(s) and/or referral for crisis).
  • Attend departmental and university meetings and collaborates with other offices and agencies. Develops relationships with university community members and community partners. Creates and provides outreach and training for faculty, staff and students.


Education & Experience:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Social Work, Education, Counseling, or Psychology and one year of related experience working with individuals with disabilities.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field and one year of experience in higher education.
