General Description:

This position will lead the day-to-day collection and analysis of qualitative data for one to 3 research studies run out of the School of Medicine (SOM) and facilitated by Department of Population Health Sciences' (DPHS) qualitative research core. This position will work with multiple DPHS faculty and investigators across the SOM to implement the research projects. Research projects generally focus on patient/participant and other stakeholder preferences for and experiences with clinical care and research; measurement development (e.g., patient reported outcomes); and empirical bioethics (e.g., informed consent).

Data

The position will carry out qualitative data collection activities, including conducting focus groups and interviews with patients and key informants. The position may also assist in selecting methods of data capture and discuss advantages and disadvantages of each and independently design electronic and paper data collection forms to capture data according to protocol. It may also assist with the development of guidances and policies related to research data provenance and security and serve as unit/departmental resource to others regarding data provenance and security. Independently investigate issues related to accuracy and completeness of data. Develop and run queries and reports. Follow SOPs for data quality assurance (QA) and actively monitor QA of study data. Recognize trends related to data quality and escalate as appropriate.

Science

The position will collaborate with a team of qualitative analysts to code transcripts and notes, analyze themes, and interpret and summarize study findings. In addition, the position may conduct and synthesize literature reviews independently; prepare for and lead team meetings and recognize when others need to be brought into the conversation while interpreting the data and escalate appropriately.

The position may also assist with development of research proposals or protocols.

Operations

Screen participants independently and provide oversight and training to study team members who screen participants. Provide oversight and training to entire unit or department with regards to maintaining subject level documentation. Set up unit-wide systems, policies related to subject level documentation.

May conduct study visits independently. Serve as a unit/departmental resource and train others regarding preparation and conduct of study visits, creation of SOPs, and implementation of operational plans. Independently maintain appropriate study-level documentation including regulatory binders, enrollment logs, patient registration in the system of record, etc.

Participate in or lead development of policies and guidance related to subject recruitment. Serve as an expert resource across unit or department. Provide oversight to study team members who conduct and document consent for participants in a variety of studies.

Serve as an expert resource with regard to conduct and documentation of consent. Develop Duke University Health System IRB documents such as consent forms, protocols, and continuing reviews independently and train other staff in these tasks.

Ethics (10%):
Communicate to research participants, both orally and written, the difference between clinical activities and research activities in all study documents and research participant communications. Assist in the design of studies so they include specific safeguards to ensure ethical conduct and protect vulnerable populations. Assist others with application of these principles. Assist with the development of Conflict of Interest (COI)/Data Safety Monitoring Plans (DSMPs)/Research Data Security Plans (RDSPs). Assist with the coordination of efforts of external monitoring boards. Identify and the explain the risk and benefits to a subject as these pertain to your clinical trial

Leadership

Actively network and encourage leadership for staff within a small work group. Take part in a committee, task force, or ad hoc group. Encourage career development by actively seeking out continuing education opportunities for self and study team members. Participate in scientific presentations and publications. Establish and assign activities to multiple team members.

Provide constructive feedback to team members. Recognize and employ the professional guidelines and code of ethics related to the conduct of clinical research.

Maintain Duke and project specific training requirements. Evaluate the need for cultural diversity and cultural competency in the design and conduct of clinical research. Make recommendations to investigative team.

Study and Site Management

Make recommendations to investigators and oversight organization regarding appropriate feasibility, recruitment, and retention strategies. Ensure participant care expenses have appropriate financial routing in a timely manner. Monitor financial study milestones and report appropriately.

Coordinate with financial teams, PRMO, etc. and participate in budget development as appropriate. Assist with study budgets. Take part in site initiation/closeout visits as directed.

Assist with the development of protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, standard operating procedures, and case report forms.

Develop and implement closeout procedures for multiple studies, unit, department, or division.

Education

Work requires one of the following: 1.Completion of a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of four years of research experience 2.Completion of an Associates degree plus a minimum of six years of research experience 3.Completion of a Master's degree and a minimum of 2 years of of research experience.

Special Skills
Experience managing qualitative research studies; experience with a variety of qualitative data collection (e.g., in-depth interviews and focus group discussions) and analysis methods (e.g., content and thematic analysis); experience with financial management of a portfolio of research projects; working collaboratively with staff who are interacting with research participants and entering data. Ability to write and speak clearly in a variety of settings and styles to convey messages and ideas effectively.
Can easily use computing software and web-based applications (e.g., Microsoft Office products, NVivo and/or other qualitative data analysis software, and online survey tools).
