Description


The Anesthesia section provides support to both the small animal and large animal hospitals regarding anesthesia and patient monitoring. This section also teaches anesthesia procedures and protocols to TCSVM students.

The Veterinary Technician provides specialized anesthesia support in the large and small animal hospitals for daily routine, critical and emergency cases. Anesthesia services are provided to large animal and small animal medicine and surgery services including, but not limited to, the LAH and SAH surgery suites, special procedures, radiology, CT, radiation therapy and MRI. Consideration for training in large animal anesthesia occurs after the technician is proficient in small animal anesthesia. This position makes a large contribution to the teaching/instruction of veterinary students during their anesthesia rotation. Participation in an emergency on-call rotation and swing shift is required. This position assists in the upkeep and maintenance of department stock and equipment. Assists with research projects as needed.


Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent with minimum two years of veterinary technician experience or technician schooling with a strong interest in further developing anesthesia skills. CVT or licensure eligible. Microsoft Word. Technical skills include: IV catheterization, phlebotomy, dosage calculations, fluid therapy, intubation, familiarity with anesthesia drugs, monitoring patient parameters under anesthesia. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation. Must be a results-oriented go-getter with strong interpersonal skills.



Preferred Qualifications:

Highly skilled in performance of advanced nursing techniques and patient assessment, excellent animal handling/restraint skills, ability to think and act independently, willingness to receive work direction from others and function as a team member, ability to communicate clearly/professionally with peers, students and clinicians. Ability/interest to learn advanced anesthesia practices/protocols/patient assessment. Previous large animal anesthesia experience strongly preferred. Good interpersonal skills to assist in teaching veterinary students, interns and residents. Ability to multitask and meet deadlines while working in a very busy and sometimes stressful environment. A pleasant, positive, professional attitude in order to interact positively with all individuals involved in the anesthesia section as well as other services in the hospital.



Special Work Schedule Requirements:

This position works a four day work week, with rotating schedule (different days off each week). This position may be scheduled to work on Saturdays and evenings. Once trained, this position will participate in the swing shift as well as a rotating on call emergency schedule which includes weeknights, weekends and holidays. This position is considered essential and is therefore required to report to work as scheduled during emergency closings.
