The School of Communication and Multimedia Studies at Florida Atlantic University seeks a tenure track, Assistant Professor to teach and develop courses at undergraduate and graduate levels and perform research in the area of Rhetorical Studies in Communication Studies degree programs.


The School enrolls approximately 1,200 undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies or a Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia Studies with a sequence focus in either Multimedia Journalism or Film, Video and New Media. The School also offers a Masters of Arts in Communication Studies and a Masters of Fine Arts in Media, Technology and Entertainment. Further information about the School can be found at


The primary assignment for the position is on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, located approximately 45 miles north of Miami. The tenure track position that requires solid research/scholarship, excellent instruction, and service for advancement. The teaching load is 5 courses per year (a 3/2 or 2/3 load).

The ideal candidate will have a rhetorical approach to undergraduate and graduate courses concerned with issues of citizenship and civic life in national and international contexts. Applicants should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: rhetorical citizenship, communication and civic life, public argument, public address, or communication, deliberation, and democracy. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.


Teaching options include undergraduate courses such as: Introduction to Communication and Civic Life, Communication, Democracy, and Civic Engagement (capstone class), Contemporary Rhetorical Theory, Classical Rhetorical Theory, Rhetorical Analyses of Democracy (intensive writing class), New Media and Civic Discourse, Publics and Counterpublics, Rhetorical Criticism (intensive writing class), American Multicultural Discourse, Argumentation and Debate, the Rhetoric of Argument (intensive writing class), or other courses in the Communication Studies BA or MA degree sequences. Effective date of employment: August 2019. Ph.D. in Communication required at time of appointment.
