Job description


Whatcom Community College invites applications for a BFET Transitional Learning Navigator. The BFET Transitional Learning Navigator's primary role is to provide support to the College's high school equivalency and Transitional Learning programs. The BFET Transitional Learning Navigator assists students and Transitional Learning staff with program intake processes, choosing and scheduling courses each quarter, and degree and certificate planning consistent with short and long term educational and career goals. The navigator uses, and teaches students to use Starfish scheduling, communication and degree planning tool. The BFET Transitional Learning Navigator will provide appropriate referrals on and off campus to students to ensure retention and academic success. This position will also be responsible for documentation and tracking using the EJAS database as required by DSHS contracts. This exempt professional position reports to the Basic Food Employment and Training/Workforce Coordinator/Navigator.

Job Responsibilities

Include but not limited to:

  • Assist students in planning and scheduling of courses consistent with their academic goals, assessment/placement levels, and program guidelines.
  • Monitor academic plans, provide quarterly advising, and intervene with vulnerable students to access appropriate resources throughout the college community using Inside Track coaching.
  • Guide and advise Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Learner (ELL) students with the transition to college-level coursework. Advise ABE & ESL students of professional-technical and transfer programs, including Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (IBEST) programs. Provide culturally responsive support and guidance for the financial aid and scholarship application process and connecting them with college and community resources.
  • Explain certificate/degree requirements, processes for transferring in credits from previous institutions, and Transitional Learning options.
  • Advise students through funding including federal, state and local grants.
  • Support Transitional Learning staff with admissions testing and Transitional Learning Intake forms.
  • Guide students in the development of their educational plans to meet prerequisites, degree requirements and career preparation with advising tools such as Starfish.
  • Provide students with information for making educational and career decisions including WOIS, ONET and SmarterMeasure.
  • Identify post-program, career development, job search, transition, and retention support for students entering the workforce using Guided Pathways.
  • Attend all Entry and Advising Department and other relevant meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain BFET caseload within DSHS eJAS database: checking, accepting, and closing referrals and completing progress notes in a timely manner. Document concerns, barriers, and progress expectations. 
  • Manage quarterly student progress reporting processes.
  • Ensure funding applications are completed each quarter and throughout the quarter as needed.
  • Monitor BFET student funding needs and collaborate across workforce funding programs to maximize funding across BFET students' academic programs.
  • Work in service of Transitional Learning with faculty, Advising and Career Services, Opportunity Grant, WorkFirst, Veteran Services and Professional-Technical advisers to ensure continuity of service, process improvement, and overall student success and retention.
  • Adapt to and learn appropriate advising/instructional technology tools including: Starfish, SMS, ADP, Degree Audit, and other advising tools and resources such as assisting students with accessing FAFSA and the Financial Aid Portal as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications, Salary and Appointment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates (AA) degree from an accredited institution;
  • At least one (1) year of familiarity with social service programs.
  • At least two (2) years working in an office environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
  • Multi-lingual;
  • Experience working with employment/career services and/or academic advising.

 Salary and Appointment: 

  • This is a one year, temporary, grant funded, full-time administrative/exempt position with possible extension contingent on grant funding. Exempt from Washington State civil service law with an annual salary range of $38,000-$40,000.
