The Department of Art & Design at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi invites applications for a full-time, tenure track, Assistant Professor of Art in 3D/Sculpture/Ceramics beginning fall 2019.

The Department of Art seeks an artist and educator enthusiastic about teaching at a student-centered university with expertise in three-dimensional art. The department seeks candidates with a strong exhibition record and active studio practice, demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level, and commitment to working with the community both on and off campus. The department seeks an energetic faculty member to complement the existing Sculpture and Ceramics faculty in creating an inclusive and diverse community of learners and makers, including non-majors, in the BA, BFA, BFATC, and MFA programs.

Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to, 3D Foundations, all levels of undergraduate sculpture and/or ceramics courses, and graduate level courses, seminars, and critiques. Beyond the classroom, teaching responsibilities include participating in BFA and MFA reviews and critiques, and serving on BFA and MFA thesis committees.

All tenure-track faculty members are required to maintain an active program of scholarship and creative activity at a national/international level as well as perform committee service within the department, college, and university. These service activities include actively supporting the development of curriculum, the recruitment of students, and supervising student-related activities.

Studio responsibilities include working with the 3D faculty to support the managing operations of the sculpture and ceramics labs and ensuring a safe working environment. This includes maintaining studio facilities and equipment, purchasing supplies, implementing safety protocols and training, and supervising studio assistants.

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in a 3D discipline, interdisciplinary studies, or related field at the time of appointment.
  • Evidence of an ongoing and active professional record at a national level.
  • Experience teaching at the university or college level.
  • Ability and interest in teaching 3D foundations and beginning sculpture courses including design principles and basic processes in wood fabrication, metal fabrication, and metal casting.
  • Ability to teach intermediate and advanced levels of undergraduate 3D studio techniques such as, but not limited to wood and metal fabrication, metal casting, throwing and hand building ceramics, public art, social practice, figure sculpture, digital fabrication, and mold making.
  • Ability to work with graduate and undergraduate students across the Sculpture and Ceramics area.
  • Knowledge of current safety and health standards in Sculpture and Ceramics studios.
  • Knowledge of trends in 3D art in relation to the contemporary art world and demonstrable expertise in the history, theory, and contemporary field of Sculpture and/or Ceramics.
  • Clear potential or demonstrated ability to work effectively with and benefit a diverse student body.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching at least one of the following at an advanced level: figure sculpture, digital fabrication, kinetic art, time-based art, and/or public art.
  • Demonstrated experience in incorporating emerging digital technologies into traditional 3D media.
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and provide leadership to graduate students across disciplines.
  • More than two years of full-time teaching experience from the introductory through graduate level.
  • Commitment to interdepartmental collaboration and participation in a team-oriented work environment.
