Posting Summary:
The Department of Student Health, General Medicine clinic is currently seeking a Registered Nurse to deliver comprehensive professional nursing care to the students of the University of Virginia. Working as a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care to both non-acute and acutely ill students, in addition to students seeking health maintenance services. The incumbent ensures compliance with physician orders and follows established nursing processes, including patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. Successful candidates will have an Associate's degree or graduated from an accredited diploma program in Nursing along with a minimum of one year of experience in ambulatory care with a primary care focus, Urgent Care Center or Emergency Department.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency with skills common to an ambulatory care setting including triage, care of the acutely ill and those with non-acute concerns, and concepts of health promotion & maintenance.

Develops a partnership with students, including education & anticipatory guidance, encouraging them to become active participants in, and assume responsibility for their care; to become informed consumers capable of navigating a complex healthcare system, adopt healthy lifestyle practices, and successfully manage their chronic illness.

Performs rapid assessments of a wide range of acutely ill patients, both by phone & in person.

Performs focused history and physical exams, prioritization & disposition of acutely ill patients, ensuring they receive the appropriate level of care in a timely manner.

Retrieves, reads and synthesizes health related information from multiple sources including: inpatient records, discharge summaries, clinic notes, radiology reports, lab values, immunization records, home health records, PT/OT reports, social work or mental health provider's notes/reports.

Functions autonomously utilizing nursing protocols to perform health screenings, required and recommended vaccines, allergy injections, order laboratory and radiological testing, refill prescriptions, and initiate referrals.

Utilizes critical thinking when encountering complicating factors.

Collaborates with the nursing supervisor and other nursing colleagues to develop a suitable plan that takes into account patient acuity, available resources, and other complicating factors.

Able to adapt rapidly to changes in clinic volume, patient acuity, and related factors to ensure the efficient & equitable use of resources.

Performs specific therapeutic interventions to assist with medical and nursing management of students requiring ongoing care.

Possesses expertise in medication administration via multiple routes, intravenous therapy, and other skills required to provide direct patient care to the college population.

Able to establish patient baseline from which to gauge progress or deterioration.

Able to recognize & respond to changes in patient condition, and transfer to a higher level of care if indicated.

Performs assessments prior to and following interventions to assess response to care and adjusts the plan of care accordingly.

Communicate updated patient status, including improvement or worsening of symptoms, the need for additional interventions, and readiness for discharge.

Provides follow-up calls to assess progress of previously seen patients.
