Randolph-Macon College (R-MC), a private, coeducation liberal arts and sciences college located in Ashland, Virginia, invites applications and nominations for the position of Provost. Among the nation’s selective liberal arts colleges, R-MC provides a truly distinct education to a student body of about 1,500 undergraduates. It is a place where students engage in genuine creativity and discovery and develop the habits of liberal inquiry and effective civic engagement necessary to become leaders both locally and globally.

The College, founded in 1830 by the Methodist Church, is located 15 minutes north of Richmond, Virginia and 90 miles south of Washington, D.C. This ideal location provides ample opportunities for students to enjoy the best of a close-knit college-town community while having access to the region’s multifaceted cultural and historical hubs. The College’s beautiful 125-acre campus boasts 79 buildings with planned expansions on the way.

R-MC is committed to preparing students to build their own extraordinary futures through a rigorous academic program that exposes them to artistic and scientific inquiry as well as mentoring from dedicated professors. With a student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1 and an average class size of 16, R-MC provides an active learning environment for students in 37 major and 39 minor programs. Intercollegiate athletics support the academic and educational experience with student athletes comprising about 34 percent of the population across 18 varsity athletic teams. R-MC students develop lifelong learning skills through the EDGE career preparation program which provides internship opportunities and connects current students to the College’s global alumni network. R-MC students also have numerous opportunities to participate in undergraduate research and culturally enriching study abroad programs.

The Provost serves as the College’s chief academic officer and is responsible for all administrative governance for the faculty, curriculum, academic and co-curricular programs and departments. The Provost oversees faculty development, maintains and strengthens academic resources, and enriches the student experience. The Provost is directly responsible for Athletics at the College, and ensures the quality of the athletic programs by managing leadership and resources, including the Athletic Director and varsity coaches. Reporting directly to the President, the Provost leads the institution in the President’s absence, as the first among the vice presidents. 

The successful candidate understands the various dimensions of the liberal arts and sciences; possesses a thorough knowledge of higher education trends; and maintains an impeccable record of character, compassion, and integrity. The ideal candidate champions diversity and equity. Priorities include the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and staff, support of an inclusive community, and the promotion of multicultural understanding and global perspectives.

The successful candidate empowers faculty to nurture innovative and creative new ideas and embraces the College’s historically strong structure of shared governance. In addition to proven experience in fiscal matters and effective management of resources, the candidate demonstrates a spirit of creativity, collaboration, entrepreneurial thinking, and exploration of new ways to approach the mission of higher education.

The ideal candidate is a proven leader who successfully builds consensus by fostering a collegial environment while remaining committed to the College’s student-centered liberal arts ethos. This candidate ensures the quality of all academic offerings while providing visionary and innovative administrative leadership.

This position requires a Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution and progressive leadership experience, including earned academic faculty tenure and administrative responsibilities in higher education.
